SABER RATTLING Anonymous Russian defense officials told news agencies on Friday that three warships carrying 360 marines are en route to the Syrian port of Tartus and will arrive within several days. The deployment of ships comes on the heels of Kofi Annan's resignation as the U.N.'s envoy to Syria and the Arab League, with Russia's Foreign Ministry calling for an immediate replacement. The statement said Russia tried to support Annan's cease-fire plan but that opposition forces had refused to negotiate, bolstered by "our Western partners, and certain regional states." Meanwhile, Britain has pledged non-military support for Syrian rebels and the United Nations General Assembly will vote Friday on a resolution condemning its Security Council for failing to end violence in the country. Gay rights activists plan to hold a national “Kiss Day” protest in response to Wednesday’s “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day,” in which supporters around the country gathered at the fast-food chain to back its chief executive’s controversial stance against gay marriage. As part of the “Kiss Day,” activists are encouraged to take pictures and videos of themselves locking lips outside the fast food restaurant, which touted record profits followings its “Appreciation Day.” POTUS Speaking out about the harsh NCAA sanctions on Penn State for the first time since they were announced, President Obama has said the disciplinary measures were “appropriate” in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse ordeal. “I have been a big admirer of Penn State football,” Obama said during an interview with an Ohio sports talk radio show. “Obviously Joe Paterno was a great football coach. But there are some things that are just more important than sports,” the president said, like protecting children from predators. Obama concluded that the sanctions were a “good message that we just have bigger priorities.” | |
