Morgan Spurlock Is for Sale
By Seth Abramovitch Morgan Spurlock Is for SaleIn POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, director Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me, Where in the World Is Osama Bin Laden?) exposes the shady practice of product placement... by documenting his efforts to make a movie funded entirely by product placement. Got that? It's a plate-spinning act that actually works, offering a sly and entertaining glimpse into the strange landscape of 21st Century advertising. We talked with the filmmaker—who showed up in a suit covered in his corporate sponsors' logos—about being loathed by McDonald's, humiliated by Abercrombie & Fitch, and ultimately seduced by the art of the hard sell. Morgan Spurlock: So am I going to be eviscerated? Gawker: I don't think so. Although your naked body is all over the site right now. So, are you sick of selling your movie yet? And how does it make you feel? Are you a natural born salesman? How many companies did you have to approach before one bit? How do you define the line between "acceptable" or "unacceptable" product placement? Are you concerned at all that with this film you might be contributing to the perception that you are anti-capitalist or anti-corporate America? Do you think you're responsible for the healthy menu choices you now see when you walk into a McDonald's? In the film, you undergo a process called "neuromarketing." I wonder if you could describe that experience? In the film, I did it by myself, but usually when they do that they do it with two or three hundred people. They get an average to how those people reacted, and then they re-cut commercial to address just the "desire centers" — the parts of your brain that respond to fear, craving, sexual desire. So they end up putting out a commercial that affects most of the population. It's kind of like this Minority Report, "pre-cog" advertising that gets you to want to buy something before you even know that you want to buy it. 2. Over 50 Killed in Syria
Dozens of people were killed on Friday as protesters across Syria were
greeted with gunfire and tear gas by government security forces. By
dusk, nine separate demonstrations had reported fatalities. According to
witnesses, up to 50 protesters were killed, including a 4-year-old girl,
who was reportedly shot in the head by a sniper. Thursday, President
Bashar al-Assad lifted the country's emergency laws which had been in
place since 1962, saying the concession took away the last pretext for
protest and that anyone taking to the streets afterward was simply a
rebel. Tens of thousands of people across the country defied Assad even
though they knew security forces had been authorized to use force. These
protests specifically targeted Assad, which is a marked change from
those in March, which were against the president's policies. Since the
protests began in Syria on March 18, at least 220 people have died.

Each week, The Daily Beast sifts through the cultural landscape to
choose three top picks. This week, Elton John kicks off the Tribeca Film
Festival, HBO examines the first family of reality TV, and Ben Stiller
returns to Broadway.
What's Hot at Tribeca
The annual New York film festival kicked off April 20 with 'The Union,'
a documentary from 'Almost Famous'' Cameron Crowe chronicling the making
of Elton John's album with Leon Russell. But that's only the beginning
of the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival's impressive lineup. There's 'Renee,'
which follows the struggles of transsexual tennis ace Renee Richards;
'Carol Channing: Larger than Life,' another documentary about the career
of the Broadway great; 'Detachment,' starring Oscar winner Adrien Brody;
and 'Last Night,' which pits Keira Knightley against Eva Mendes for
'Avatar' star Sam Worthington's heart. The fest runs through May 1 with
luminaries such as Nora Ephron, Dianne Wiest, and Whoopi Goldberg making
up the jury that awards $175,000 in cash and prizes to winners in six
categories. See our top picks and find out which movies can be seen
on-demand from your home!
