Follow Friday: @MumbleBane

There have been many goofs on The Dark Knight Rises's mask-muffled and puzzlingly accented villain Bane since he was revealed in previews this month, but perhaps only one spoof on the malicious mushmouth transcends the usual Comic Book Guy snark. I'm speaking, as clearly as I can, of @MumbleBane, without a doubt the finest Bane parody on Twitter.

That's right, there are other Bane Twitters burbling about, including @MuffledBane and @RisesBane, but not all flapdoodle is created equally. What elevates @MumbleBane is that he doesn't just present garbled versions of regular speech (e.g., from @RisesBane, "Dosh dish mazzg mekmeh shounds funnah?"). No, @MumbleBane takes his parody to the next level, rendering the speech in the intelligently unintelligible manner of Bane himself. Bane, after all, has not just brawn but brains, and the human ear hears his murmuring not merely as sound but as a charming if baffling word salad. As @MumbleBane tweeted recently, "Jackie O cures Ugandan deliverance. Nevermore curse boomerang nettles! Batman in bullrushes, Bane is the cruelty free tangerine!"

The result is nothing less than the best kind of nonsense verse—like a fine cadavre exquis, or Mad Libs. Observe a couple more choice Jabberwockian tweets:

Having comic superheroes and supervillains pop into your Twitter feed is already one of Twitter's secret pleasures (see also the popular series of Hulk feeds, like the great Feminist Hulk). If you use your Twitter account for work, such feeds offer special enjoyment, adding some surreality ...

Happy Days Are Here Again!
Don't believe the naysayers: An economic recovery is right around the corner.
By Matthew Yglesias
Posted Friday, Dec 30, 2011, at 07:22 PM ET

Economic forecasting is a mug's game. There are simply too many unknowable factors that affect "the economy" for anyone to make accurate predictions. The Fukushima earthquake and nuclear disaster, for instance, had a noticeably negative macroeconomic impact around the world, and nobody knows what lurks inside the hearts of central bankers. Plus, if I did possess the secrets to the future, I'd be making a fortune as a speculator, not telling you about it.

Still, the application of economic theory should be able to help us avoid the commonplace error of simply assuming that the future will be like the past, that after 18 months of sluggish growth we're due for sluggish growth to continue. The conventional wisdom is that the relatively strong growth in the fourth quarter was a false dawn, and the economy is destined to stall out. This is mistaken. Some tragic unforeseen disaster could hit us, but if it doesn't we should be in for a string of increasingly strong quarters and accelerating growth that put us back on the path to full employment.

My guru in this prediction is Karl Smith, an economist at the University of North Carolina, one of the authors of the Modeled Behavior blog, and one of the few sources who saw through the cloak of pessimism this past summer and accurately called for a strong close to the year. But in a deeper sense, I'm following the long-dead Swedish economist Knut Wicksell, whose work is ...

The Iron Lady of Iowa
Michele Bachmann tries to remind Hawkeye voters why they loved her so much back in August.
By David Weigel
Posted Friday, Dec 30, 2011, at 05:44 PM ET

NEVADA, Iowa—In a few minutes, Michele Bachmann's whale-blue campaign bus will pull up to the Snack Time Family Restaurant in this central Iowa town. It's running a little late. I use the extra time to buy a copy of the Ames Tribune, the paper that serves the college town next door. On Page One: a picture of Bachmann standing on a chair, surrounded by signs with her name on them, rapt Iowa crowd totally unaware of the banner headline they're going to appear under: "Wheels coming off?"

Bachmann is closing out a 14-day, 99-county tour of the state where she was born. At each stop, she delivers a capsule version of her stump speech, shakes hands, and poses for a video asking the good people of the county to caucus for her. All that work, and what's the story? Kent Sorenson.

Her Iowa campaign chairman, a first-term state senator, ditched her on Wednesday night. He appeared with her at a stop in Indianola, and then, hours later, joined Ron Paul in Des Moines to announce his switch. "There is a clear top tier in the race for the Republican nomination for president," he explains in the Tribune, adding that he maintains "an immense amount of respect for Michele."

Funny, she doesn't seem to think of him that way. "Kent said to me yesterday that 'everyone sells out in Iowa, why shouldn't I,' " she told the Tribune. "Then he told me he would stay ...
