50 years ago Saturday, thousands of activists descended on Washington, D.C., to peacefully rally for equal civil and economic rights for blacks. On the golden anniversary of the March on Washington, thousands once more headed to the National Mall to commemorate the event and discuss how far there is to go, featuring speakers such as Eric Holder and Al Sharpton. During the original March, Martin Luther King, Jr., gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech, which contemporary marchers will recognize as they make their way from the Lincoln Memorial, past the memorial to King, and arrive at the Washington Monument. The president commemorated the civil rights landmark in a speech on Friday, saying, "We've made enormous strides," but that there are many institutional barriers yet to overcome.
