Case Study on the Benefits of Reverse Auctions in Health Care: Johns Hopkins Health System

Johns Hopkins HospitalImage via Wikipedia

For those that may have reservations about using reverse auctions, here's a "from the front-lines" success story about how they can be effectively used in the health care environment to save money and make procurement more effective in the process. The link below is to a very good presentation given by William Kennett, who is the Senior Supply Chain Director at Johns Hopkins Health System in Baltimore, Maryland. It is a very engaging presentation from the recent 2010 IDN Summit as he walks you through the road that his organization took in first trying - and then fully buying into - the reverse auction/e-sourcing concept. Watch at:

Very good stuff - and hey, you get to hear a great conference presentation without having to leave you office or your family and save the high registration fee and travel hassles, too! Watch and then forward on to those in your company/organization who may still have their doubts about reverse auctions. Millions saved and better purchasing - game, set, match for reverse auctions and e-sourcing!

Is Technology Making Your Students Stupid?

Nicholas Carr speaking at the VINT Symposium h...Image via Wikipedia
No doubt, Nicholas Carr is a napalm-bomb throwing flamethrower (and that is meant as a compliment)! He loves to instigate controversial debates over technology - and in the past, he has made many in the technology community - and in the wider world of businesses and organizations - really come to question the orthodoxy. Witness the debate which ensued from his 2003 publication in the Harvard Business Review with the provocative title "IT Doesn't Matter." Hundreds of articles, thousands of comments, and millions of hits punctuated that debate over the commoditization of information technology (for a good overview, see: Technology Hits a Midlife Bump)

Now, Carr is taking on how we use technology for learning. Read this piece that is sure to spark intense debate that was just published in The Chronicle of Higher Education. Again, with the provocative title, "Is Technology Making Your Students Stupid?", Carr takes on how we think, how we do research, how we teach, and the whole notion of "smart" classrooms. Read:

Post your thoughts here on the blog - and when you find articles continuing the debate, send them to me at dwyld.kwu@gmail.com and I'll post them here to update the dialogue...

LeBron James' circus on ESPN draws its fair share of critics - Richard Deitsch - SI.com

This is a great analysis of the whole LeBron James announcement - great commentary on where we are as a society (even if, and maybe especially, if you're not a sports fan). Read:

LeBron James' circus on ESPN draws its fair share of critics - Richard Deitsch - SI.com

Love this comment:

Eric Stangel, the head writer and executive producer for The Late Show with David Letterman, delivered an equally scathing review on Twitter: "I'm keeping my 2 yr old up to watch the LeBron James Special. I want her to see the exact moment our society hit rock bottom."

What do you think about the way this whole episode went down? And from the basketball end, will it work or will it blow-up big time? Look forward to your comments here on the blog!

Let me predict, Christmas Day on ABC - Lakers vs. Heat (or even better, Heat vs. Cavaliers in Cleveland for the first time!). Doesn't take Nostradamus to predict that one! One of these games would actually draw some viewers!
