MUST READS FROM ALL OVER

ROUGH TACTICS
1. Our Dangerous Torture Debate

Some are arguing that intelligence obtained through torture led us to
the capture of Osama bin Laden. But Andrea Prasow, senior counsel in
Human Rights Watch's Terrorism and Counterterrorism Program, says that
had we stuck to lawful tactics, we might have found him even sooner.
"Each time the U.S. has strayed from core values there have been
national security consequences," she writes, and there are examples of
foreign fighters joining the war in Iraq following the release of the
Abu Ghraib abuse photos. "The best way to guard against future attack is
by rejecting the use of torture outright and staying faithful to the
rule of law and basic tenets of decency," Prasow writes.

AL QAEDA
2. Bin Laden Was Still Active Leader

He may have lived like a hermit, but Osama bin Laden was the active
leader of al Qaeda, according to initial analysis of the documents
obtained in the raid on his compound. Without Internet or phones, bin
Laden's compound was still "an active command and control center for al
Qaeda's top leader," said a U.S. official speaking on condition of
anonymity. Bin Laden used couriers to issue orders to his terror
network. "He remained focused on inspiring and engineering international
terrorism and on attack the U.S.," an American official told reporters,
speaking anonymously. The official wouldn't say what plans were in the
works, only that he "appeared to show continuing interest in
transportation and infrastructure targets." CIA Director Leon Panetta
said the material seized in the raid "confirms how important it was to
go after bin Laden." A CIA-led multi-agency task force is currently
translating, cataloguing, and analyzing the documents obtained in the
raid. The U.S. already released home videos of bin Laden showing him
with a blanket draped over his shoulders and his beard unkempt, watching
television footage of his younger self.

AFGHANISTAN
3. Taliban Continues Assault For Second Day

The Taliban edged on its Kandahar assault for a second day, after
launching coordinated suicide and machine gun attacks. Two security
personnel and three civilians have been killed, and 46 others have been
injured. Police say they have killed 14 Taliban fighters, including some
from Pakistan. Yesterday suicide bombers and militants armed with
rocket-propelled grenades attacked government buildings and public
areas. Today Governor Tooryalai Wesa, who earlier swore to kill the
Taliban fighters "one by one," said the insurgents were putting up heavy
resistance, and explosions and heavy machine-gun fire could be heard in
the city. The BBC's Bilal Sarwary says it's the worst attack in Kandahar
since the fall of the Taliban in 2001, and an embarrassment for the
Afghan government. The Taliban denied the attack was in response to bin
Laden's death, saying it had been planned for some time.

PRISON BREAK
4. Al Qaeda Frontrunner Kills 18

While being interrogated inside a jail in Baghdad early on Sunday
morning, an al Qaeda operative seized a security guard's gun and led a
mutiny that killed 18 people, including the head of counter-terrorism
for Baghdad's central Karrada district, several lieutenants, and 10
inmates. An anonymous interior ministry official said that Huthaifa
al-Abatawi, who led the mutiny, was being interrogated because officials
suspected his group was likely to strike out in revenge of bin Laden's
death. He was arrested in November 27 for heading the uprising and
killings at a Baghdad church in late October. "Several investigations
were on going against them, and that's why they were still being held by
this unit," said an official. Followed by several other inmates,
al-Abatawi seized a stash of weapons and grenades before trying to break
out of the jail in a police car, but they were met with security
reinforcements who killed them mid-escape. Five remaining suspects from
al-Abatawi's cell remain in the prison.

FLOOD
5. Mississippi River Reaches Record High

There's a reason they call it the "Mighty" Mississippi: As heavy rains
pound the river's basin and drive water levels above their record
heights, the mayor of Memphis has warned city residents to prepare for a
possible "large-scale disaster." Officials have begun building sandbag
buffers around the city and raised levees where water levels have
climbed to dangerous heights. Thousands have evacuated the city, leaving
their homes behind to live in tents and campers at higher grounds. One
woman showed CBS News correspondent Mark Strassman photos of her
submerged home north of Memphis. "What's next? We've never had anything
like this. We've lost crops to the water. We've never lost a house," she
said. Things haven't been worse since the Mississippi flood in 1927, the
most destructive in U.S. history, after which engineers built a system
of levees and reservoirs that protect some four million people today.
But that system is certainly being tested. The river is expected to
crest next Wednesday at 48 feet.
