The Sad, Pink Donkey Who Ignited a Taco-Boycotting Revolution

By Seth Abramovitch

The Sad, Pink Donkey Who Ignited a Taco-Boycotting Revolution

The Sad, Pink Donkey Who Ignited a Taco-Boycotting RevolutionL.A.'s Pink Taco, a restaurant named after female genitalia that serves bad Mexican food to people who would eat bad Mexican food at a restaurant named after female genitalia, has pissed people off. How? In honor of Cinco de Mayo, they spray painted a donkey pink, wrote the words "Pink Taco" on its side (pathetically), and chained the humiliated animal to their entrance in 85 degree heat. Isn't that fun? ¡Olé!

According to OC Weekly, passersby noticed the broken pack mule — whom the restaurant calls "Pinky" and who has been used in other, equally stupid promotions — and took to social media with their disgust. Before long, the Facebook group Boycott Pink Taco Century City was formed. (Consider it done.) Realizing a backlash was brewing, the restaurant deleted its Twitter and Facebook accounts.

According to an eyewitness, a police officer "gave Pink Taco a cease and desist order, making the restaurant take down the 'display' as it didn't have a permit."

All of this brings back memories of the controversy that accompanied Banksy's first L.A. gallery show in 2006, in which the artist painted a live elephant with a pink and gold wallpaper pattern. Animal rights activists protested, and L.A. Animal Services attempted to withdraw the permits, unsuccessfully. The paint was eventually removed, but the elephant was still made to stand for the remainder of the show's three days.

Banksy would go on to be nominated for an Oscar, though, so chin up, Pink Taco! Hollywood loves second chances. [OCWeekly, photo via OC Weekly]

CHEAT SHEET
MUST READS FROM ALL OVER

BOOKS
1. Mortenson Sued for Fraud

A new legal shoe has dropped in the scandal surrounding disgraced 'Three
Cups of Tea' author and international humanitarian Greg Mortenson-this
time in the form of a lawsuit that seeks the return of donations and
damages on behalf of donors to his charity, the Central Asia Institute.
One of the two plaintiffs wants her donation back, and the other a $12
refund for her copy of the book. The Daily Beast's Mike Giglio reports.
Plus, view the court filing.

THE NUMBERS
2. Unemployment Up to 9 Percent

Not bad, but not great, either: The U.S. economy added 244,000 jobs in
April, enough to exceed forecasts, but not enough to keep the
unemployment rate from rising from 8.8 percent to 9 percent. Analysts
expected a gain of 185,000 jobs, and private payrolls alone beat their
prediction, accounting for 200,000 of the economy's new jobs. The end of
March wrapped up the first quarter, in which the economy grew at a tepid
1.8 percent. Middle East turmoil sent the price of oil up, which reduces
the amount of money consumers have to spend. The tsunami in Japan led to
supply delays that filtered down into American manufacturing. "Even with
these distortions accounted for, the result was still poor, and suggests
some slowing of employment growth," a Goldman Sachs analyst said.

Each week, The Daily Beast sifts through the cultural landscape to
choose three top picks. This week, the mighty 'Thor' gets an inventive
reimagining, Ai Weiwei's spirit comes alive near Central Park, and new
revelations about Cary Grant.

The Nerdy Secret Behind 'Thor'

Marvel Studios' much hyped superhero film 'Thor' is finally upon us.
Released Friday, the flashy $150 million mashup of Viking lore and good
old-fashioned caped crusading is being hailed by critics as a witty take
on the typically overblown genre. So what's the film's secret to
success? Moviegoers need to look no further than the director's chair:
hailed Shakespearean scholar Kenneth Branagh took a break from acting in
the Royal Shakespeare Company and adapting the Bard's classics for the
big screen to direct the thunder God's tale—and the unlikely marriage
has paid off. Turns out that growing up in Belfast in the '60s, Branagh
was captivated by Marvel's 'The Mighty Thor' comic book like no other
cultural offering. He spent two years working with screenwriters to
flesh out the movie's fraternal rivalry between Thor (Chris Hemsworth)
and his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and humanize the larger-than-life
characters. In this week's Newsweek, Chris Lee talked to the director
about his superhero turn. "This is not meant to be pompous, portentous
museum entertainment," Branagh says. "To work in Hollywood, to work on
this kind of scale? Nothing blasé in my attitude. The desire is to
entertain, to be absolutely of now and in the moment, and to find
balance and originality in that."

Exclusive: Pakistan Intelligence Chief Expected To Resign

Senior Pakistani officials tell The Daily Beast they recognize that an
important head has to roll and soon to allay both domestic and
international anger and dismay over the presence of Osama bin Laden in a
military cantonment town close to Islamabad. They say the most likely
candidate to be the fall guy is Lt. Gen. Ahmad Shuja Pasha, the director
general of the country's spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence
directorate.
