The Billionaires Next Door

Chrystia Freeland | Reuters | 15 October 2012

Show Me The Money

Cass Sunstein | New Republic | 5 October 2012

Corporations overwhelm consumers with complex fee structures, pages of fine print. It's not quite fraud, but it's close. Regulators must step in to enforce simplicity. Competition won't do that when the market rewards opacity Comments

What Can You Really Know?

Freeman Dyson | NYRB | 18 October 2012

"For most of the 25 centuries since written history began, philosophers were important. They had a deep influence in the worlds of politics and morality as well as in science and scholarship." Not any more. But why not? Comments

Why No One Has Been Right About Libya

John Dickerson | Slate | 18 October 2012

"The next debate should get into big questions: What is the biggest crisis you've faced? How do you define the national interest? What is a sufficient justification for military action?" But the conversation is headed elsewhere Comments

Difference Engine: End Of The Electric Car?

NV | Economist | 15 October 2012

Is there a more efficient way of storing electricity for use in vehicles, other than charging batteries or making hydrogen for fuel cells? "A growing body of opinion seems to think liquid air is the answer" Comments

People Of The Bookshelf

Geraldine Brooks | Global Mail | 11 October 2012

On shelving books. You can do it alphabetically—or with a human touch. "I arrange my shelves as I would guests at a dinner party. Claire Messud and Alice Munro? I’m sure they’d get on. Norman Mailer and Anne Michaels? I think not" Comments

Cheat Sheet - Cashing In on Pot—the Legal Way

Today: Cashing In on Pot , Democratic Icon George McGovern Dies , Protesters Storm Lebanese Govt. HQ
Cheat Sheet: Morning

DEALERS

Marijuana use in the United States is rising sharply, and voters may make it fully legal in two states this fall. Meet the savvy businessmen banking on a budding new trade. Tony Dokoupil reports in this week's Newsweek.

OBIT

Former senator George McGovern died Sunday morning at age 90, according to a family spokesman. The political seer lost in a landslide to Nixon in 1972, was ridiculed for his anti–Vietnam War stand and caricatured as the candidate of "amnesty, abortion, and acid," and went on to be revered as the conscience of the Democratic Party. By Eleanor Clift.

OUTRAGE

Beirut braced for demonstrations Sunday to coincide with the funeral for a critic of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Lebanese security chief Wissam al-Hassan died along with two others in a car bombing Friday that has been blamed on Assad's regime. Fears in Lebanon have spread that the violence that has plagued Syria for 18 months could spill over into the neighboring country, and police presence was high in Beirut on Sunday as officials prepared for al-Hassan's funeral.

ANY END?

Ten people died in a bomb blast in Damascus while international peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday, state media reported. The bombers seem to have targeted a police station in the Syrian capital. Bloodshed continued in the embattled country while Brahimi, who represents the United Nations and Arab League in Syria, met with the country's foreign ministers and opposition leaders before talking Sunday with Assad. Thirty thousand people are thought to have been killed in fighting over the last year and a half, and Brahimi has called for a ceasefire over the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha.

DEAD HEAT

This is the 47 percent the Romney camp would prefer you focus on. In a new poll conducted after the second presidential debate, President Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney are locked in a dead-even sprint toward Election Day. The nominees are tied at 47 percent each among likely voters in the Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll. Obama leads 49 percent to 44 percent among registered voters. The margin of error in the poll for registered voters is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. For likely voters, it is 3.43 percentage points.
