Stranded Coloradoans Airlifted from Flood Zone One if by land, two if by...air? A massive flood that began in Colorado Wednesday continued into Friday as authorities sent in helicopters to rescue stranded residents of the small mountain village of Jamestown. The town, which lies in a canyon, was isolated by flooding that left no land-based way for its remaining 295 citizens to evacuate. Meanwhile, the National Guard sent trucks to Lyons, a city to the northeast, with more airlifts expected to follow. Food and clean water were dropped to residents still awaiting rescue as the flood rapidly accelerated into parts of an area the size of Connecticut. The rescues continue into Saturday. NPR announced Friday that in an effort to decrease staff by ten percent, the company is offering buyouts. The scheme aims to eliminate the radio outlet's $6.1 million deficit. The company also announced that Paul Hagga, a current board member, will take over as temporary president and CEO until a permanent candidate is found, starting September 30. Okay, NPR. Islamist Rebels in Philippines Hold 100 Hostage While all eyes have been on Syria, Islamist rebels in the Philippines are having their own moment. 200 fighters from the Moro National Liberation Front, a separatist organization, began a six-day standoff with authorities Monday when they took over 100 people hostage. So far, 22 people, including 15 militants, have been killed in sporadic fights between rebels and troops. Although the group's leader agreed to a truce on Friday, by Saturday the group of fighters was still holding its position, exchanging gunfire with troops sent in to end the standoff. The country's vice president said he planned to fly in on Saturday to assist with negotiations.
