Cheat Sheet - 'A Fiery Tribune': David Frost Dead at 74

Today: Kerry: Samples Test Positive for Sarin , The Odds of War in Syria? A Lot Higher Now , Mandela Leaves Hospital
Cheat Sheet: Afternoon

September 01, 2013
Obituary

David Frost, who died suddenly on Saturday, went from stand-up comedian to challenging Richard Nixon in a series of blockbuster interviews. Clive Irving remembers the legendary interviewer.

EVIDENCE

Secretary of State John Kerry says that samples taken from Syria have tested positive for Sarin, adding to a mountain of evidence that proves Assad is culpable for a recent chemical weapon attack that killed hundreds in Syria. "In the last 24 hours, we have learned through samples that were provided to the United States that have now been tested from first responders in east Damascus and hair samples and blood samples have tested positive for signatures of Sarin," Kerry said on NBC's Meet The Press. Sarin is an odorless, colorless nerve agent that the CDC says is one of the most toxic and volatile chemical weapons in existence.

Game On

President Obama took a page from the Bush playbook and made a strong case for military action in Syria. Now the question is will Congress follow suit and approve a strike—or will they take the side of a murderous war criminal? Michael Tomasky runs the numbers.

HOMEWARD BOUND

Nelson Mandela is going home, but he's not out of the woods. The anti-aparteid leader has been battling a recurring lung infection for many months and will continue to receive intensive care from his Johannesburg home from the same medical staff that oversaw his care in the hospital. His condition "vacillated between serious to critical and at times unstable," South Africa's President Jacob Zuma said.

BAD RELIGION

A spiritual leader in India has been arrested on charges that he raped a 16-year-old girl when she visited his Jodhpur retreat weeks ago. Asaram Bapu has hundreds of thousands of followers, among them the girl's family who has followed him for over a decade. Asaram denies the charges, calling the girl "mentally unstable." The guru recently angered many Indians when he said that that the victim of the Dehli bus gang rape might not have been brutally attacked and killed if she had called them brothers and begged them to spare her.

Kerry: We Won't Lose Syria Vote

Secretary of State John Kerry appeared on 'This Week' Sunday to discuss President Obama's request for a congressional vote on taking military action in Syria. 'The president knows that America is stronger when we act in unity,' Kerry told host George Stephanopolous. When pressed about Obama going ahead without approval, Kerry remained confident: 'We are not going to lose this vote.'
