Gulf Oil Spill: The Impact on the Commercial Fishing Industry in Louisiana

Here's a local New Orleans news story (WWL-TV) reporting on the impact of the BP oil spill on independent commercial fishermen in the coastal parishes of Louisiana. As you will see, there's a growing frustration with the situation:

What you don't see is that our local airwaves (and yes, our Google Ads on the Web) are all about law firms recruiting fishermen and others impacted by the oil spill to file suits against BP and TransOcean.

Let's hope for the best for all - and for these hard working folks in particular. If they don't survive this economically - with help forthcoming soon - this will likely be pretty much the end of the Louisiana seafood industry.

The Lighter Side of College: Top 10 Worst Student Essay Topics

This is a hilarious article from our friend Richard Nordquist, who is an About.com Guide covering the Lighter Side of Grammar & Composition. For my friends across campus in the English Department, this may not seem as funny as it might be to us business professors, but some "interesting" topics here to say the least.

Interchange Fees: New Senate Card Rules Could Make Shopping Cheaper (or Not!)

Watch your wallet on this one folks! Rather than a discount for cash, I see more charges for credit cards! The retail industry and credit card issuers will likely push credit customers to use more debit cards, as their exposure is far, far less with those products and debit cards make their "cash flow" fantastic!

Law & Order: CANCELED By the Genius Executives at NBC?

Right now, execs at acronym-companies are not faring very well (NBC, BP). This would be a bad, sad move, as right now, Law & Order is in one of its best seasons. It would be a shame to see it be "thrown under the bus" so we could have another dancing, singing, weight loss, or dating reality show. Keep it on - or hopefully, at least shift it to cable. Perhaps another network would wisely step-up and pick-up this "franchise player" (hey, if they can do it for shows like "Medium" and "Scrubs," this is a no-brainer!).

Gulf Oil Spill May Be Far Larger Than Current Estimates

Well, are we surprised? BP has really, really got a nightmare on its hands (and in our waters and on our beaches). One of these long-shots better work for them, or else, we could be looking at an Exxon Valdez squared, cubed-level environmental and economic disaster!
