ESCALATION

The bloodshed in Syria spilled beyond the country’s borders on Saturday. Three people are dead and many more injured after Syria shelled farms and villages in northern Lebanon, which has served as a base for the rebels hoping to overthrow the government of President Bashar al-Assad. It isn’t the first time the violence has spilled into Syria’s neighbor to the southwest: Syria has made a somewhat regular habit of bombing villages and chasing militants across the border.

STAGNANT

There’s work to be done, but it isn’t leading to good new jobs. That’s the story behind the numbers in Friday’s jobs report. The report indicates that rather than hiring, firms are relying on existing workers and bringing in temps, which helps explain why the average workweek increased for the first time since February. While the increase in work does indicate that demand is at least holding steady in the face of economic slumps just about everywhere, it’s also a sign that firms don’t have enough confidence in this trend to expand their payrolls permanently.

DOOMSDAY

Monday could bring bad news for some Internet users. The FBI will be lifting a stopgap measure it implemented against the nasty DNSChanger virus back in November, and after it does infected computers may be unable to get online. While only 64,000 or so U.S. computers are expected to be hit, the incident, says experts, will serve as an important test-case in one of the primary safeguards against this sorts of attacks: the public-private partnership between the FCC and Internet service providers, many of whom have adopted voluntary countermeasures against this attack.

BLACK BAG

In an excerpt from their new book, Spies Against Armageddon, Dan Raviv and Yosi Melman argue that Mossad special agents are behind the assassinations of Iranian nuclear scientists. But will it be enough to stop Iran from building nukes?
