Dear Prudence Wife's Best Friend Is Hubby's Worst Enemy In a live chat, Prudie advises a man whose wife's best buddy is out to "destroy" him. By Emily Yoffe Posted Monday, Jan 09, 2012, at 08:05 PM ET
Emily Yoffe, aka Dear Prudence, is on Washingtonpost.com weekly to chat live with readers. An edited transcript of this week's chat is below. (Sign up here to get Dear Prudence delivered to your inbox each week. Read Prudie's Slate columns here. Send questions to Prudence at prudence@slate.com.) Emily Yoffe: Good afternoon, everyone. So far I haven't slipped and written 2011 on anything yet. Q. Intrusive and Annoying Friend of Wife: One of my wife's friends has hated me since the day she met me. While early on, her hatred was tolerable, lately it's become annoying and more than a little creepy. I work in research and development, the same industry as her. I often have lunch with colleagues, both male and female, while we discuss work. She has spotted me a few times having lunch with a female colleague and without even talking to me, she's reported to my wife that she thinks I'm having an affair (even though it's been a different woman each time—apparently I really get around). My wife was suspicious at first but is not so worried now. (I've never cheated on her and have given her no reason to believe I have or would.) This woman ran into me last week and told me, "I'm going to destroy you" and walked away. I told my wife, and she said I must not have heard her correctly. How do I convince my ... Politics My Baloney Has a First Name, It's M-I-T-T Will Newt Gingrich's attack on Mitt Romney's "pious baloney" change the New Hampshire race? By John Dickerson Posted Sunday, Jan 08, 2012, at 11:29 PM ET Newt Gingrich spoke for everyone in America when he asked during the NBC News-Facebook New Hampshire debate, "Can we drop a little bit of the pious baloney?" Gingrich was talking to Mitt Romney, but let his exasperated call reach President Obama and leaders in Congress and let it ring in the ears of all the GOP candidates on that stage. Newt Gingrich is not immune to the request. Any candidate who says his adultery came in part from loving the country too much knows how to slice that baloney thick and wriggling. Gingrich's call may have been a little rude, but it represents progress. Fifteen debates and finally the exchanges are getting a little more frank, a little more serious, and inching towards some identifiable lines of reason. The candidates are talking about the leadership attributes necessary to be president and pressing each other on their qualities. They are actually debating, owning up to their arguments, and stating them clearly. In prior debates, the candidates merely recited their stump speeches in parallel. Or they sniped over useful things like Mitt Romney's lawn care company. There are two kinds of pious baloney (at least). One is the lunch meat you hurl at your opponents or dish out to cover up a shortcoming. When Gingrich called himself a small businessman during questions over his payments from Freddie Mac, this was pious baloney. He wanted to align himself with the noble, dry-cleaning Mom and Pop to duck being charged as an ... To continue reading, click here. Tv Club Downton Abbey, Season 2 Why on earth is Matthew Crawley going off to war? By June Thomas Posted Monday, Jan 09, 2012, at 09:15 PM ET Gents, I'm fascinated by your takes on Mr. Bates. Seth, you say he "almost seems to enjoy the martyr role, savoring his punishments." I think I understand why he takes his licks so stoically. He's a manservant with a physical disability and a criminal record—he already has two strikes against him. Or as they might say in Britain, they've brought in the slips, and there's a good pair of hands at silly mid on. Dan, you call him "too good a man for his milieu." Eh, I'm not impressed by his treatment of Anna. As commenter Rikki points out in response to an earlier entry in this discussion, "He's not just sacrificing his own happiness for the sake of the Grantham family reputation, he's sacrificing Anna's too, when clearly she should take priority in his loyalties." I hope he hasn't really abandoned Anna and that he's got something up his perfectly turned-up sleeve, because for reasons I don't completely understand, the young and lovely head housemaid is all-in on the older, slightly shop-soiled valet. He would surely never give up her love for a bunch of toffs. (I understand that he wants to keep her reputation and employability intact, but it sounds like what happened with the Turkish gentleman is already the talk of every servants' hall north of Watford.) Speaking of excessive sacrifices, I know that this is the opposite of a) what the show wants us ... To continue reading, click here.
