CHEAT SHEET
MUST READS FROM ALL OVER
CONTROVERSY
1. Inside Florida's Koran Burner's Church
Afghanistan endured a second day of violence Saturday sparked by Florida
Pastor Terry Jones' Koran-burning. At least eight people were killed as
a crowd of thousands marched through Kandahar, chanting slogans and
attacking government buildings. The violent demonstration comes after a
crowd angry over the burning of a Koran in Florida attacked the U.N.
mission in Mazar-i-Sharif, killing four Nepalese guards and three
European workers as well as several Afghans. The Daily Beast's Leon
Dische Becker meets the congregants of Jones' church in Florida.

ETHNIC VIOLENCE
2. Violence in Ivory Coast Kills 800
The Red Cross says 800 people were killed in one Ivory Coast town this
week, as Laurent Gbagbo, who refuses to leave office, and Alassane
Ouattara, his elected successor, continue to battle for the country's
presidency. The deaths occurred Tuesday, the Red Cross says, but it is
not clear who is responsible. Ouattara has been in control of the town
since Tuesday. The United Nations says it has received reports of major
human-rights violations by both sides. Meanwhile, Ouattara's forces have
Gbagbo surrounded in the city of Abidjan, but the forces still loyal to
Gbagbo are putting up fierce resistance from the presidential palace.
Nevertheless, diplomats say it is impossible for Gbagbo to escape defeat
at the hands of his U.N.-approved rival, Ouattara.

JAPAN
3. Nuclear Plant Leaks Directly Into Ocean
Highly radioactive water is leaking directly into the Pacific Ocean from
an eight-inch crack in a pit full of contaminated water at Japan's
damaged nuclear plant. The air directly above the water registered 1,000
millisieverts an hour. The director of Japan's nuclear safety agency
also says higher than normal levels of radiation have been detected 25
miles south of the Fukushima plant, much farther than previously
reported. Workers will try to patch the crack with concrete, but it is
still unclear where the radioactive water in the pit came from.

CHALLENGES
4. Ex-Mujahideen Lead Libyan Rebels
This might explain Robert Gates' wariness of arming the rebels. Two
former Afghan mujahideen and a six-year detainee at Guantanamo Bay are
helping lead the rebels in the Libyan town of Darna, raising concerns
over the presence of Islamists among Gaddafi's opposition. Abdel Hakil
al-Hasady, a former fighter from the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group,
which was formed by ex-mujahideen returning from Afghanistan, is now
training fighters in Darna. Another rebel leader, Ben Qumu, is a Libyan
army veteran and former employee at Osama bin Laden's holding company in
Sudan. He spent six years in Guantanamo before being released to Libyan
custody in 2007. Adm. James Stavridis, the NATO supreme allied commander
in Europe, told the Senate Tuesday that there were "flickers" of al
Qaeda among the rebels, but said they were a minor element. Hasady,
anyway, says he's changed his views since his mujahideen days. "Our view
is starting to change of the U.S.," said Hasady. "If we hated the
Americans 100 percent, today it is less than 50 percent. They have
started to redeem themselves for their past mistakes by helping us to
preserve the blood of our children."

2012
5. Obama Readies Campaign Start
Here we go. President Obama may officially start his 2012 reelection
campaign as early as Monday, sources familiar with the decision tell The
Wall Street Journal. After his announcement, Obama plans to head to
Chicago for a fundraiser, then New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.
Obama's team also plans to hold "Gen44" events geared toward young
voters. His decision to launch the campaign in the midst of budget
negotiations and a potential government shutdown will likely irritate
some Democrats concerned that he'll be too focused on crafting a 2012
strategy. It's already drawn fire from Republicans, with RNC
communications director Sean Spicer attacking the president for working
on his reelection "at a time when millions of Americans continue to be
out of work." Despite fundraising by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt
Romney and an exploratory committee by former Minnesota Gov. Tim
Pawlenty, no Republicans have officially entered the field.
