MICROSOFT ANNOUNCES DEVICE MANAGEMENT FOR WINDOWS PHONE 7, EMBEDDED PCS
Microsoft announced new tools designed to simplify management of embedded devices and smartphones. Windows Embedded Device Manager 2011 targets hardware such as thin clients, digital signs, point of service products, and kiosks, while the Beta 2 version of System Configuration Manager 2012 previews control over phones running Windows Phone 7, iOS, Android, and Symbian operating systems.

WINDOWS EMBEDDED STANDARD 7 SP1 GETS REMOTE MANAGEMENT OF ITS WRITE FILTERS

NEW WINDOWS VERSION TURNS OLD PCS INTO THIN CLIENTS
Microsoft released a public test build of software designed to turn legacy PCs into thin clients. Windows Thin PC is a locked-down version of Windows 7 that includes RemoteFX enhancements to its RDP (remote desktop protocol) client as well as disk write filters, according to the company.

MICROSOFT ADDING NFC TO WINDOWS PHONE 7, REPORT SAYS
Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 operating system will gain support for NFC (Near Field Communication) later this year, according to a Bloomberg News Service report. The technology would allow phone users to purchase merchandise or tickets with a flick of their handsets, the story adds.

Acer announced pricing and availability for a most unusual Windows 7 tablet, featuring dual 14-inch screens. The Iconia 6120 Touchbook includes an Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB of memory and a 640GB hard disk drive, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, and an HDMI port, according to the company.

IDC: WINDOWS PHONE 7 WILL BE FASTEST-GROWING SMARTPHONE OS
Android will surge to a dominant 39.5 percent share of the fast-growing global smartphone market this year, then further climb slowly to a 45.4 percent share by 2015, says IDC. However, the research firm adds, Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 will actually see the fastest growth, supplanting Symbian to reach a second-place 20.9 percent share by 2015.

CLEARING THE WAY FOR WHITE SPACE NETWORKS
Microsoft researchers have come up with a way to better utilize "white space" networks, which would tap into unused TV spectrum to deliver broadband services. "SpecNet" would create a network of spectrum analyzers, allowing remote detection of frequencies that could be used for transmission, according to a paper that will be presented next week.

INTEL OFFERS 25NM-FABBED SSDS WITH UP TO 600GB
Mechanical hard disk drives took another step toward obsolescence via Intel's announcement of its "third-generation" solid state disks (SSDs). Now offered in capacities as high as 300 or 600GB, the SSD320 series offers lower pricing, sequential write speeds that have doubled in speed, plus new encryption and data protection features, the company says.

WINDOWS-POWERED SMART CAMERA GETS FIVE MEGAPIXEL UPGRADE
Matrox Imaging announced that the Intel Atom-powered "smart camera" it created for "machine vision" applications is now available with a five megapixel sensor. HMI PC COSTS UNDER $120, HAS SMARTCARD READER
Win Enterprises announced a 4.3-inch panel PC that runs Windows CE 6.0, is intended for HMI (human machine interface) applications, and costs under $120 in quantity. The PL-80270 includes an integral smart card reader, a 300MHz ARM9-based processor, three serial ports, 256MB of RAM and 256MB of flash storage, an SD slot, and an Ethernet port, according to the company.

ALL-IN-ONE PC ADOPTS AMD'S E-350
MSI announced an all-in-one PC that includes AMD's dual-core, 1.6GHz E-350 processor and Radeon HD6310 graphics. The Wind Top AE2050 includes a 20-inch display with optional touch capabilities, up to 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard disk drive, stereo speakers, and two USB 3.0 ports, the company says.

Foremay is shipping a NAND solid state drive (SSD) claimed to be the world's smallest SSD "disk-on-chip." Its OC177 DOC chip measures only 0.87 x 0.87 x 0.07 inches (22 x 22 x 1.8mm), supports standard IDE or SATA host interfaces, and is available in 32GB capacities, with a read/write speed of up to 70/40MB/sec, says the company.
