CHEAT SHEET
MUST READS FROM ALL OVER

TENSION
1. Bibi's White House Tantrum

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's rejection of President
Obama's Mideast speech underestimated Obama's growing strength—and could
hasten Netanyahu's political demise. The Daily Beast's Michael Tomasky
reports on how Netanyahu misjudged his base of supporters in America and
in Israel. Plus, reactions from Israel, Palestinians, and the Arab
League.

BRUTAL
2. Syrian Police Kill 44 Protesters

The violence in Syria continues to escalate: 44 people were killed
Friday as thousands of protesters gathered in several towns, including
Damascus, which had yet to see serious clashes. A spokesman for the
Syrian National Organization for Human Rights reported Saturday that
more than half were killed in the northwest province of Idlib. Deadly
suppression of mass demonstrations came a day after President Obama's
Mideast policy speech, in which he urged President Bashar al-Assad to
"lead that [government] transition, or step out of the way." Assad
promised in a Syrian newspaper that the unrest would soon come to an
end, but violent clashes have shown no sign of dissipating. So far,
hundreds have been killed in the nine-week uprising and thousands more
arrested.

PLOTS
3. Bin Laden Wanted to Blow Up Tankers

We can add oil tankers to the list of vehicles Osama bin Laden was
planning to hijack and blow up. Files obtained in the bin Laden raid
reveal the al Qaeda leader wanted to hijack oil tankers and blow them up
at sea in an attempt to rattle the world's oil market. The plot seems
not to have gone beyond fantasy, but the FBI issued a warning to police
and the energy industry Friday that the terrorist group had shown
interest in tankers as late as 2010, and that it wanted to blow them up
in the spring and summer. Security analysts have warned for years,
especially since the outbreak of pirate hijackings off Somalia, that
blowing up a tanker would be an easy way to affect global markets. More
files obtained in bin Laden's compound show he may have had a hand in a
plot to carry out bombings in England during Easter. The plot was foiled
in 2009, though not in the most effective way: Britain's head of
counterterrorism was photographed carrying plans for the raid, forcing
police to act before they had sufficient evidence to convict the
plotters.

BLIND LOYALTY
4. Strauss-Kahn's Wife Stands By Her Man

It's been a whirlwind week of court trials, bail money, and scandal for
Dominique Strauss-Kahn and after he was arrested in New York last week
for sexually assaulting a hotel maid. His wife, Anne Sinclair, has been
accustomed to turning a blind eye to her husband's womanizing ways, and
publicly stated in 2006 that she's "proud" of his reputation: "It's
important to seduce, for a politician." Even after the news came out
that the IMF chief had an affair with someone in his company, Sinclair
wrote on her blog, "everyone knows that those things happen in couples'
lives." No one knows how the former famous television journalist truly
feels on the inside, except that she has proven she will support her
husband unconditionally. "I don't believe for a single second the
accusations of sexual assault by my husband," she said in a statement
immediately after the news broke. "I am certain his innocence will be
proven." Born into a wealthy family herself, Sinclair has paid for
Strauss-Kahn's $1 million bail, along with an apartment for her husband,
an electronic monitoring bracelet, and armed guards to watch over and
protect him while he is under house arrest.

PROTEST
5. Spain Defies Protest Ban

Mass protests have reached Spain, where 25,000 people took to the
streets in demonstrations against the government's economic policies and
high unemployment Saturday. The protest began six days ago as a sit-in
by people frustrated with the country's 45 percent youth unemployment,
but has since grown into a call for better living standards, a fairer
system of democracy, and a stop to the socialist government's austerity
plans. "They want to leave us without public health, without public
education, half of our youth is unemployed, they have risen the age of
our retirement as well," said one protester. Spain's electoral
commission had ordered them to leave ahead of Sunday's elections, but
when the midnight deadline struck, protesters cheered and police didn't
move in.
