WHAT'S THAT SMELL?

Shocked by news that Carnival's Triumph had sewage oozing out of the walls? Try visiting the crew's quarters on your next cruise vacation. It's just one big, floating backed-up toilet, writes Cruise Confidential author Brian David Bruns.

SUSPICIOUS

Unconfirmed audio from a police scanner indicates officers started the fire at the Big Bear cabin where Richard Dorner holed himself up and likely died. Dorner, a former LAPD officer, stole a car, and then shot two officers, one fatally, in a shootout before barricading himself in the cabin, which then went up in flames. The cause of the cabin fire is unconfirmed, but according to audio believed to be from the police scanner, officers said "seven burners deployed and we have a fire." Police have confirmed charred remains have been found inside the cabin, as well as a driver's license belonging to Dorner, but have not yet confirmed the remains are his. Dorner had held Southern California hostage for six days after killing an engaged couple and a cop and disappearing in Big Bear.

Media

Who is trying to buy Time Inc.? Fortune reports that Time Warner is discussing selling off Time Inc., the largest magazine publisher in the U.S., to a mysterious buyer. It's not clear which magazines would be sold: one scenario has Time Warner combining People, InStyle, and other titles into a single company and selling it off, while keeping Time, Sports Illustrated, and Fortune. Time Inc.'s revenue fell 6.6 percent last year, and last month it announced that it would lay off 6 percent of its workforce. Time Warner CEO Jeffrey Bewkes would be following the lead of Rupert Murdoch, who decided to separate News Corporation's publishing arm from its film and television business.

SCANDAL

British police and meat regulators on Tuesday night raided a slaughterhouse and a processing plant suspected of selling horsemeat as beef while French prosecutors opened a judicial investigation into whether the horsemeat was sold fraudulently. In Britain, selling horsemeat is not illegal, but eating it is taboo. The British regulator, Food Standards Agency, said it had suspended operations at a slaughterhouse in northern England and a processor in Wales, and the head of the agency is due to meet with European Union regulators in Brussels. The scandal began when burgers packaged as beef in Ireland were discovered to actually be horsemeat, and it has since spread to as many as 16 other countries. On Tuesday upscale British supermarket chain Waitrose pulled frozen meatballs from the shelves.
