BEWARE

OK, we exaggerate, but looming spending cuts won't simply hurt Pentagon employees. Get ready for longer airport lines, food shortages, shuttered national parks, and worse. Caitlin Dickson breaks the bad news.

MYSTERIOUS BLAST

The death toll continues to rise following dual explosions in Hyperabad, India, on Thursday. Now at least 16 people have died in two different private hospitals. Families of 14 of the victims have already been reunited with the bodies. The entire country of India has been ordered on general alert for the last two to three days while an investigation into what caused the blasts continues. Many in India believe bombing attacks were to blame, motivated by the hanging of Mohammad Afzal Guru for his involvement in the 2001 attack on Indian Parliament.

APOCALYPSE APPROACHES

Will Earth eventually be destroyed by an asteroid apocalypse? Michio Kaku attempts to answer that question in this week's issue of Newsweek Global. In the wake of the recent cosmic crash in Russia, Kaku suggests it unwise to ignore evidence that extra-large asteroids, so-called nation busters, lurk above us. One of the most dangerous, Apophis, measures at 1,000 feet and is expected to graze Earth's atmosphere in 2029. "If Apophis hits Earth," Kaku writes, "it would have the force of approximately 20,000 Hiroshima bombs."

IT'S ON!

Ambassador Susan Rice, Eva Longoria, and America Ferrera are among the prestigious group of women confirmed to be speaking at Newsweek and The Daily Beast's fourth annual Women in the World Summit this year. Tickets to the summit, which will take place at Lincoln Center in New York City on April 4 and 5, are on sale today. The inspiring two-day event will feature speeches and panel discussions with women from around the globe. All proceeds from ticket sales will go directly to the Women in the World Foundation, which promotes the advancement of women and girls worldwide.

JUDGMENT

Despite pleas from the prosecution that he would flee the country, a judge has granted bail to South African murder suspect Oscar Pistorius. The double-amputee and former Olympic track competitor faces a charge of premeditated murder—the country's most serious murder charge—for shooting his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, whom he claims to have mistaken as a robber locked in his bathroom early on Valentine's Day.
