Cheat Sheet - Stop Blaming Christy Mack: Porn Stars Don't Deserve to Be Beaten

SLUT-SHAMED
Just a few days after Christy Mack shared her account of a gruesome beating allegedly at the hands of her ex-boyfriend, MMA fighter Jonathan Koppenhaver, the victim-blaming has already started. Far too many online commentators have used Mack's career in pornography to claim she deserved the brutal injuries, writes Samantha Allen. Mack may be a porn star, but she's also a human being.

The officer who shot and killed an unarmed teenager on Saturday in Ferguson, Missouri, was injured during the altercation, police reported Wednesday. According to Ferguson Chief of Police Tom Jackson, the officer, who has still not been identified, "was hit" and the "side of his face was swollen." The chief didn't disclose whether any bones were broken. According to the police, 18-year-old Michael Brown was walking with a friend when the officer tried to get out of his car. Brown then allegedly pushed the officer back into the car, went into the car, and then a fight broke out over the policeman's weapon. The shot was fired inside the car, the police say. An eyewitness who was walking with Brown sharply disagrees with that version of events, saying the cop hunted Brown down.

In a blockbuster interview with WIRED, Edward Snowden says that the National Security Agency has a secret, autonomous program called Monstermind that can conduct and respond to cyberattacks without human intervention. The program also launches its attacks through third-party computers in foreign countries, which is dangerous for U.S. diplomatic efforts, says Snowden. "These attacks can be spoofed," Snowden said. "You could have someone sitting in China, for example, making it appear that one of these attacks is originating in Russia. And then we end up shooting back at a Russian hospital. What happens next?" Snowden also says he has not even read all of the documents he took from the NSA, so there will be more revelations. He also says he volunteered for prison, that the NSA has not cleaned up its act, and that an accident knocked Syria off the Internet.

TAINTED LOVE
The Ebola virus is spreading through West Africa like wildfire, and a communal burial ritual is only adding to its victims. Many West African families cannot bear to part with deceased loving ones without washing, touching, and kissing the corpses, reports Abby Haglage. But barring families from these practices can have even worse outcomes because they lash out, at times violently, at humanitarian workers.

Zelda Williams, the 25-year-old daughter of Robin Williams, announced Wednesday that she is quitting social media due to "cruel" images and messages about her father. In a tweet, she wrote, "I'm sorry. I should've risen above. Deleting this from my devices for a good long time, maybe forever. Time will tell. Goodbye." On Tumblr, she issued a longer post, which addressed those who apparently sent her photoshopped pictures purporting to be her father's dead body. She wrote, "As for those who are sending negativity, know that some small, giggling part of him is sending a flock of pigeons to your house to poop on your car. Right after you've had it washed. After all, he loved to laugh, too." She also asked users to report the two Twitter accounts behind a lot of the abuse. Twitter has suspended the two accounts.
