Cheat Sheet - GOP Slams Equal Pay for Women

April 09, 2014
TOO EASY

Tuesday was Equal Pay Day, a day meant to mark how much extra time women would have to work in 2014 to make as much as men. So while Democrats dusted off the Paycheck Fairness Act, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Democrats are trying to "blow a few kisses to their powerful pals on the left," though he maintains he was talking about attacks on the Koch brothers. Nevertheless, the "war on women" theme is raging again, reports Eleanor Clift.

FINDERS, KEEPERS

American spies have spotted all the signs of a Russian invasion of Ukraine. Eli Lake reports the U.S. refuses to share the imagery, intercepts, and more with Kiev. It's the type of information that could be critical to saving the country from partition or occupation by Putin.

HORRIFYING

As many as nine people were stabbed at around 7:15 a.m. on Wednesday morning at a Pittsburgh-area high school. According to a spokesman for Westmoreland County, the suspect is in custody and nine people (ages 15 to 60) have been taken to hospitals. The first emergency calls were made 15 minutes after the doors opened. The school issued a bulletin saying: "A critical incident has occurred at the high school. All elementary schools are canceled, the middle school and high school students are secure."

TOUGH LIFE

Providers have been crying out that Medicare is squeezing their livelihood, but apparently that isn't the case for everyone. Data was released after a federal judge ruled that payments from Medicare to providers could be published for the first time. And no wonder the American Medical Association tried to block the release: The data shows that 100 doctors received $610 million between them. Of $77 billion paid to doctors in 2012, one Florida ophthalmologist made $21 million, while dozens made more than $4 million, and $15 billion went to just 2 percent of doctors.

WHOOPS

An encryption method that is used by many websites to protect users' sensitive data, including passwords, bank accounts, and Social Security numbers, has been found to have a significant bug that makes this information vulnerable. Researchers are calling it "Heartbleed" because it attacks the heartbeat portion of the OpenSSL. When the memory on a running OpenSSL is exploited, hackers have potential access to usernames and passwords, trade secrets, and the private encryption keys that organizations use to communicate privately with their customers. On Tuesday, Tumblr and Lastpass were already warning users to change their usernames and passwords. "Companies need to get new encryption keys and users need to get new passwords immediately," said David Chartier, the chief executive at Codenomicon. "And do it quickly."
