Secretary of State John Kerry touched down in Geneva for an unexpected visit Friday to meet with foreign ministers from France, Britain, and Germany in what he hopes will be the final stage of Iran nuclear talks. Long before a deal was in reach, however, the U.S. was quietly lifting some of the financial pressure on Iran, according to a Daily Beast investigation. Eli Lake and Josh Rogin on how the sanctions were softened.

NATURAL DISASTER

Typhoon Haiyan attacked the Philippines early Friday with maximum sustained winds of 195 miles per hour, likely the strongest tropical cyclone to ever hit land. Three people were killed and seven reported injured in the early hours of the storm. But worse, another 12 million are at risk in the Philippines' 20 provinces. Power and communications have been lost on several of the country's islands.

ANTI-'DOUBLE DOWN'

Mitt Romney's chief strategist looks at 'The Gamble,' the other new book about the 2012 presidential race, and the cold, hard data on why Obama won. By Stuart Stevens.

Surprise

The U.S. economy added 240,000 jobs in October, a surprising gain for a month skewed by the 16-day government shutdown. The unemployment rate ticked up from 7.2 to 7.3 percent, likely because federal workers furloughed by the shutdown were counted as unemployed. In another bright spot in the report, job numbers from September and August were revised upward by 60,000, meaning more jobs were added than originally calculated. The October gain surprised forecasters because the impact of the shutdown had made the month difficult to predict. The Labor Department's report, usually released on the first day of the month, was delayed a week because of the shutdown.

Moving Forward

It was a historic day for gay rights, as the U.S. Senate voted to ban workplace discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation on Thursday. The 64-32 vote in favor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act—better known as ENDA—was the first approval of pro-gay-rights legislation since Don't Ask Don't Tell was repealed in 2010. While Senate Republicans like John McCain argued that passing ENDA was "the right thing to do," the legislation still faces significant opposition in the largely socially conservative House of Representatives.
