Cheat Sheet: Afternoon

SHE'S BACK

The former Alaska governor is back from her exile at Fox News—and she's talking a whole new game, trying to pass herself off as a libertarian in the mold of Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul. But don't be fooled, writes Nick Gillespie, editor of the libertarian magazine Reason. There's every reason to believe that Palin's new outlook is misinformed, cynical, or both.

SMALL STEPS

As Afghan soldiers officially take control of their own national-security efforts, the U.S. has announced a new round of peace talks with the Taliban—the first in over a year. The Daily Beast's Josh Rogin reports.

SLOW DOWN

Those who were hoping House Speaker John Boehner would cobble together a coalition on immigration reform that cut out the most conservative members of his party got some bad news Tuesday morning. Boehner has been reassuring his caucus that he's not going to advance the bill without their support. "I have no intention of putting a bill on the floor that will violate the principles of our majority and divide our conference," Boehner reportedly said during a private meeting. The congressman said he wants to see an immigration-reform bill succeed, and blamed the Democrats for slowing down progress.

MOST WANTED

Sixty-five years after he was found guilty and sentenced to death for torturing and helping send Jews to death camps from the Slovak city of Kosice, former Nazi police commander László Csatary was charged with war crimes. The 98-year-old—named the Simon Wiesenthal Center's most wanted war-crimes suspect—was detained by Hungarian authorities last summer and put under house arrest in Budapest after decades in hiding following his death sentence. "He is charged with the unlawful execution and torture of people, [thus] committing war crimes partially as a perpetrator, partly as an accomplice," said a spokeswoman for the Budapest Chief Prosecutor's Office, who added that he "deliberately provided help to the unlawful executions and torture committed against Jews deported to concentration camps."

WTF?

Pro-lifers may have some compelling arguments, but lately Republicans can't seem to find them. As the House prepares to debate outlawing all abortions after 20 weeks, Rep. Michael Burgess has come out with perhaps the wackiest case for fetal sentience yet. "Watch a sonogram of a 15-week baby, and they have movements that are purposeful," he said. "They stroke their face. If they're a male baby, they may have their hand between their legs. If they feel pleasure, why is it so hard to believe that they could feel pain?" Before joining Congress, Burgess was, shockingly, an OB-GYN.
