THREE STRIKES

Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun are among 20 players reportedly about to be slapped with 100-game suspensions. But what is the point of all this? David Roth thinks this whole exercise is already a bust.

VENICE BIENNALE

Imagine a single work of art that captured a sense that, after all these decades of trying, modern art hasn't managed to change the world, or even much affect it. Welcome to the 55th Venice Biennale, where Blake Gopnik asks: has all the art in the world been made?

OBAMA SHAKEUP

One of the core members of President Obama's inner circle, NSA director Tom Donilon, is resigning, White House officials said Tuesday. President Obama plans to replace him with Susan Rice, the United Nations ambassador. Rice's appointment is likely to cause some waves in Washington, since she had been roundly criticized by Republicans for spreading talking points that were later discovered to be wrong after the attack in Benghazi that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans. She had been rumored to become the next Secretary of State, but Republicans vowed to block her nomination—although it appears the White House is getting the last laugh, since the NSA chief does not need Senate confirmation.

EVERYDAY I'M HECKLIN'

President Obama reacted pretty coolly when confronted by a protester two weeks ago—but then again, maybe he has more practice with hecklers. Michelle Obama, on the other hand, threatened to leave a fundraiser Tuesday night after she was confronted by a heckler—and "came right into [the protester's] face." "One of the things I don't do well is this," Obama said, according to the transcript. According to the pool report, Obama "left the lectern and went up to the protester" and said "listen to me or take the mike, but I'm leaving. You all decide. You have one choice." The protester, Ellen Sturtz, a lesbian activist, was then escorted out of the room. Sturtz said she was "taken aback" by Obama's response.

BATTLE

The Syrian Army on Wednesday retook the strategic town of Qusayr, the center of intense fighting for the past two weeks. Near the Lebanese border, the Syrian Army had been helped in the battle by Hezbollah fighters from Lebanon, leading the leader of the main rebel group, the Free Syrian Army, to say that his fighters were prepared to take the battle inside Lebanon. Syrian state TV said a large number of rebels had died and many had surrendered. The rebels admitted that they had withdrawn overnight. Meanwhile, a missile struck near the town of Aleppo on Tuesday, killing 26 people, with reported casualities on both sides.

Domino's Deploys Pizza Drone

In a move that might turn the drone debate on its head, the pizza chain recently introduced the DomiCopter, a remotely-piloted, cheesy-goodness-delivering aircraft. Sure beats that high school stoner with the beat up old Dodge.
