| | May 31, 2013 | | Viral Superstar The latest exercise craze? Prancercisizing! Joanna Rohrback, the woman behind the horsey exercise routine, tells The Daily Beast's Winston Ross all: the joys of galloping in ankle weights, the injury that almost dashed her dreams forever, her new book, and more. The Chutzpah Bee Arvind Mahankali won this year's national spelling bee when he got 'knaidel' right. But, asks The Daily Beast's Daniel Gross, isn't it a little meshugge to say there's a right way to spell a Yiddish word? Also, see photos of the agony and ecstasy of the bee contestants. Violent Rains Severe weather including heavy rains, hail, and even tornadoes hit Arkansas overnight causing, among the damage, fatal floods. The number of deaths is still unknown, but it has been confirmed that Sheriff Cody Carpenter, of Arkansas's Scott County, was killed in the flooding. According to state police, there have been other confirmed fatalities in the same area where Carpenter was checking on a home when he went missing amid the rush of floodwater Thursday night. A Scott County sheriff's office dispatcher said water rescues are currently being carried out, as the flooding is still very widespread. ON THE CASE The FBI is determined to poach the poisonous pen pals who've been sending ricin-laced letters to President Obama and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. After arresting a man in Spokane, Washington, Thursday, investigators zeroed in on another person of interest in Texas who may also be responsible for some of the malicious mail. Several poison-tainted letters addressed to politicians have made their way to mail-screening facilities in the months since the Boston Marathon bombing, but the sources of the letters, and the motivation behind them, have remained relatively unknown. One of the letters addressed to Bloomberg, however, explicitly referenced the mayor's gun control efforts. UPRISING At least 10,000 rioters have descended on Gezi Park in Istanbul in an attempt to stop police from demolishing the treasured park in the city's center—which houses trees up to 75 years old. Law enforcement is reportedly using tear gas and hoses to fend off the protesters, who are angry at the decision to turn the park into a shopping mall. Rumors are circulating that police have begun resorting to harsher weapons, such as rubber bullets, to control the growing mob. Through a Reddit thread, rioters are documenting the scene as it plays out, Tweeting with the hashtags #OccupyGezi and #DirenGeziPark, the latter of which became the second-highest trending tag worldwide Friday morning. | |
