DEADLY

The World Health Organization calls it a "threat to the entire world" and at least 26 are dead. Why all the scary talk about the strange, deadly virus coming out of the Middle East? Kent Sepkowitz explains.

How do you spell w-i-n-n-e-r? The crowd at the Scripps National Spelling Bee went wild when Arvind Mahankali, a 13-year-old from Queens, New York, won with the word "knaidel," a German-derived Yiddish word that means a small mass of dough, like a dumpling. "The words were extremely hard," the unfazed champion said while hoisting his trophy in the air from the stage. This was Mahankali's fourth and final time competing, but this time he beat out 280 other contestants to take home $30,000 in prize money.

FBI MATERIAL

Fans of Obama's choice for the new director of the FBI, James Comey, praise him for taking principled stands, while critics look at the same episodes and see something less admirable. Daniel Klaidman reports.

SET UP

Yanira Maldonado was released from a Mexican prison Thursday night, days after Mexican soldiers found about 12 pounds of marijuana stashed under the seat she was sitting in on a bus from Mexico to Arizona. Initially, it was Yanira's husband, Gary, who was arrested, but once she convinced the soldiers to let her accompany her husband to serve as his translator, they decided to just arrest her and let him go. While Yanira sat in the Nogales jail, her husband and lawyer were both confident that a security video from the bus company proving that the pot had been stuck under the seat before the Maldonados—the only Americans on the bus—sat down, would exonerate her. And sure enough, court officials saw that the couple had only blankets, bottles of water, and a purse on them when they boarded--and Yanira was released hours later.

NONSTOP STORMS

Oklahoma seriously cannot catch a break. Ten days after a major tornado leveled the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore, killing about two dozen people, three more twisters struck the Sooner state. Two others touched down in Arkansas, leaving at least nine people injured from the series of storms. All five of Thursday night's tornadoes were much less dangerous than the one that swept through Moore. Some roofs were damaged but no building collapses have been reported, and at least two of the nine injuries—all of which occurred in Arkansas—were the result of lightning.
