Cheat Sheet - Is This 1918?! Flu Epidemic Spreads

Cheat Sheet: Morning

January 10, 2013
IS THIS 1918?!

A major influenza epidemic is taking hold across much of the United States, but there's a curious lack of coverage in the media. Dr. Kent Sepkowitz looks at the strain of flu hitting us and whether a vaccine will work.

CRUSH

Misty Benjamin has photos of the Aurora shooter in her wallet and on her bedroom walls. Outside Wednesday's chilling hearing, she talks to Christine Pelisek about her crush—and why Holmes isn't "a bad guy."

YIKES

The men charged with the rape and murder of a New Delhi woman were "tortured" to extract a confession, a potential lawyer for three of the suspects said Thursday. Manohar Lal Sharma, who is likely to represent three of the suspects, said one 22-year-old was "coerced into admission" and tortured for 10 days. The court ruled Thursday that the charge sheet for five of the suspects needed more scrutiny, and no decision was made on moving the case to a fast-track trial. A sixth suspect, believed to be a minor, is expected to be tried separately. Six men have been accused of brutally raping a 23-year-old New Delhi woman on a bus in December, resulting in her death and sparking a national debate in India about the treatment of women.

NEED SOME ACTION

Too bad 30 Rock is just a show—a Donaghy-Biden meeting would be gold. The vice president will meet not only with the NRA on Thursday, but also with representatives of Comcast (the parent company of NBC Universal), broadcasters, and movie-theater owners as part of the president's task force on gun laws. On Wednesday, Biden said that "executive action" will be taken on guns, although NRA president David Keene then called the task force "disingenuous" and attacked it for "going after the Second Amendment." The president formed the task force in the wake of the shooting in Newtown, Conn., that left 20 children and seven adults dead.

REALLY?

Looks like Jerry Sandusky will not disappear quietly into prison. The disgraced former Penn State football coach is due back in court Thursday to appeal his conviction on 45 charges of sexual abuse of young boys. He has been sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison for abusing 10 boys during a 15-year period. Sandusky claims that his lawyers did not have enough time to prepare for the trial—and that they were overwhelmed by a deluge of materials from the prosecution. The attorney general's office argued in a brief last week that Sandusky and his attorneys were made aware as early as 2008 that he had been accused of sexual assault.
