The National Rifle Association has gained more than 100,000 new members since the horrific shooting in Newtown, CT. which ended the lives of 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary, including 20 children. Politico reports that the number of paid members now stands at 4.2 million people. But the NRA is just getting started. “Our goal is to get to 5 million before this debate is over,” the Association said in a statement. The report comes just one day after Vice President Joe Biden told the press that he was "determined to take action" on gun control legislation, calling it a "critically important" issue for The White House. Biden plans to meet with the NRA today. Grisly Three female Kurdish activists were shot and killed in the heart of the French capital, it was discovered today. The Daily Beast’s Christopher Dickey and Tracy McNicoll on possible motives—and the threat to peace. Scary Three emerging flu or flulike epidemics are threatening the U.S. The annual flu season has gotten off to an early start with an aggressive variant of Influenza, a large and early outbreak of norovirus or "stomach flu", and the worst outbreak of whooping cough in 60 years, with 42,000 confirmed cases. Boston's mayor has declared a public health emergency due to widespread cases of Influenza. On a national scale, deaths and hospitalizations are still below epidemic thresholds, but experts believe that will change. The C.D.C. continues to advocate getting flu shots, and a spokesman said, "We don't know if the season has peaked yet." POSTMORTEM Former NFL player Junior Seau was suffering from a degenerative brain disease when he committed suicide last May, according to researchers at the National Institutes of Health. The NIH study found that Seau’s brain had abnormalities consistent with chronic traumatic encephalopathy and researchers found that the damage to the brain was similar to autopsies of people “with exposure to repetitive head injuries.” Seau’s family requested the analysis after his suicide, and family members said that he had exhibited odd behavior before his death. His son said, “I don’t think any of us were aware of the side effects that could be going on with head trauma when he passed away.” | |
