Women in the World Summit Goes Global!

Today: Despite Intimidation, Alleged Victim Testifies Against Accused Rapist , Anna Wintour to Be Ambassador?
Women in the World

TRAILBLAZING

Newsweek and The Daily Beast are hosting the first-ever international edition of the Women in the World Summit today in São Paulo, Brazil, a country where a female dynamo is president and where the number of women breadwinners has doubled in a decade. Twice as many women hold top executive positions in Brazil than they did a year ago. More Brazilian women earn Ph.D.s every year than do men. But it's not all good news. Equal pay for equal work is a dream deferred. Domestic violence is a national epidemic. Follow live coverage our summit—where speakers including Condoleezza Rice, Diane von Furstenberg, and Egyptian activist Dalia Ziada join Tina Brown—today on The Daily Beast.

RAPE

A young woman from a tightly knit Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn has boldly broken from her insular community by standing against an alleged rapist. The accused is an unlicensed therapist named Nechemya Weberman. He is charged with 88 counts of sexual assault of a minor, whom he counseled for about three years beginning when the girl was 12. "He was a God" within the community, said the teen of Weberman while testifying against him last week. The defendant enjoys strong support in the community. The alleged victim testified that she had faced intimidation like bribery and threats to drop the case. Allison Yarrow tells her story.

VOGUE

Will they call the tell-all The Devil in the Embassy? Vogue editor Anna Wintour is reportedly being considered by President Obama for an ambassador position in either Britain or France—but she may not even want it. Obama is said to want to thank his biggest fundraisers—including Wintour—with ambassador gigs, although she could face serious competition from other top supporters. But a Vogue spokeswoman insisted Wintour is not interested in the position, saying the 25-year veteran editor is "very happy with her current job."
