Brahimi urges "real" change in Syria
UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi has called for "real" change in war-torn Syria. Brahimi, who was wrapping up a visit to Damascus, is to discuss the issue with Russia's foreign minister later this week.

The Central African Republic's president has called for foreign help against rebels moving towards the capital. His calls are falling on deaf ears.

Iran's only female cabinet minister dismissed
Iran's president has dismissed the only female minister in his cabinet. Health Minister Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi was the first and only woman to have held a ministerial position in the Islamic Republic's 34-year history.

Bhutto son makes political debut
The youngest politician in Pakistan's Bhutto dynasty has made his debut political speech. Meanwhile Taliban militants have taken at least 22 soldiers hostage in the northwest of the country and killed two others.

Israel eases some restrictions on Gaza Strip border
Israel is allowing the import of construction material into the Gaza Strip for the first time since 2007. The move is part of a ceasefire agreement between with Hamas after eight days of deadly fighting in November.

Bundesliga's Bremen replace Allofs with hockey manager
Bundesliga soccer club Werder Bremen have appointed Thomas Eichin as their new sporting director. The post had been vacant since Klaus Allofs bolted for Wolfsburg in mid-November.

China's new Beidou satellite navigation system has started offering services to users across the Asia Pacific region. Beijing hopes the technology will eventually have the potential to compete with the US' GPS.

Adidas eyes record revenues in the next few years
German sports gear maker Adidas has said it's aiming to log record revenue in 2012 and in the next few years. The company has brushed aside accusations it would tolerate sub-standard wages at Asian facilities.
