An international group has officially recognized the legitimacy of the Syrian opposition coalition as the sole representative of the Syrian people. The declaration came shortly after the US backing of the Syrian group.

Egypt opposition: vote 'no' on constitutional referendum
Egypt's leading opposition group has called on citizens to vote "no" on a referendum concerning the country's controversial constitution. The announcement comes as Egyptians abroad begin voting in embassies.

Germany approves bill to protect male circumcision
German lawmakers have approved a bill to keep male infant circumcision legal after a regional court ruled earlier this year that the practice amounted to bodily harm. The bill passed with an overwhelming majority.

Health Minister Bahr 'furious' about apparent mole
The government in Berlin has called for a swift investigation into the possible theft of documents, which were allegedly sold on to lobbyists in the pharmaceuticals industry. Health Minister Daniel Bahr is not amused.

North Korea launches long-range rocket
North Korea has fired a long-range rocket, which Pyongyang claims is aimed at launching a peaceful research satellite. The test appears to have had a measure of success, with an object apparently placed into orbit.

Deutsche Bank CEO Fitschen in focus of tax fraud probe
Police have raided Deutsche Bank offices in several cities in search of evidence of tax fraud and money laundering related to EU carbon emissions trade. One of the bank's two chief executives is now under investigation.

Greek buy-back program helps lighten debt load
Greek sovereign debt managers have confirmed the successful completion of the country's program for buying back state bonds. The scheme has left Athens with less debt, as it awaits more international loans.

EU banking union appears to have overcome impasse
Newspaper reports have claimed a Franco-German impasse over the European Union's planned banking union has been resolved. The ECB's direct supervising powers now seem to be much clearer.
