| | November 01, 2012 | | BACK TO LIFE New York City showed signs of getting back on its feet on Thursday in the effects of the devastating Hurricane Sandy as its 108-year-old subway system roared back to "partial" life at 5 a.m. Thursday morning. "It's the lifeline of the city," said one early rider, technology worker Ronnie Abraham. The subway will only offer limited service, as much of downtown Manhattan still has no power and only three of the eight East River subway tunnels have been dried out. In areas without subway service, there are some shuttle buses running as well as bus service--and all subways and buses will be free on Thursday. FINAL STRETCH Mitt Romney is not having a good week in the Midwest. A new poll released on Wednesday showed that President Obama is leading Michigan by six points--with over half of voters saying the auto bailout was a "deciding factor." Obama leads the state 48 percent to 42 percent, according to a Detroit News/WXYZ poll, with a four-point margin of error. Half of respondents said the bailout of GM and Chrysler was a deciding factor--despite a recent ad campaign by Romney claiming Obama wanted to ship Chrysler jobs overseas, a claim debunked by Chrysler. A Marquette University poll released Wednesday showed that Obama was leading the battleground state of Wisconsin--Paul Ryan’s home state--by eight points. DEADLY A fuel tanker crashed into a bridge in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, early Thursday morning, killing at least ten people. Another 111 were wounded, said Brig. General Mansour al Turk, a spokesman for the interior ministry. The fire caused flames to sweep over the Saudi capital in the busy morning commute. | |
