Prep-School Tragedy

A female graduate of the elite Horace Mann prep school in New York comes forward about the sexual abuse she suffered during her relationship with a trusted teacher, following reports this summer in The New York Times about men who were abused at the school as boys. Now an adult, this woman shares her personal story, explaining why a child stays silent in the face of abuse. “It has not been easy for me to relive my experience,” she says, in describing the violent relationship with her teacher that began with a rape and continued through high school. “But I hope my story will shed light on what goes through a child’s mind in such a situation—and why he or she might not speak up.” A Daily Beast exclusive, as told to Abigail Pesta.

Russian Controversy

Members of the Russian punk group Pussy Riot, jailed for two years for performing an anti-Putin prayer, want authorities to cancel a planned transfer to a remote penal colony. More than 2,000 prisoners have died in or en route to Russian prisons in just the last six months, according to Russia’s prosecutor general. And the young women’s lawyers, who do not expect an appeal of their sentence for hooliganism to be successful, have received threatening messages from prison employees. Anna Nemtsova reports on the dangers—and why the women’s appeal will probably fail.

Burmese Icon

In a landmark trip, Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi is in the U.S. for the first time in 40 years. In a wide-ranging speech in Washington, D.C., Suu Kyi touched on everything from the geopolitics of the region to the history of the U.S. relationship with Burma. Her remarks were preceded by an address from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who said, “It’s wonderful to see Suu Kyi back in Washington as a free and forceful leader of a country opening up to the world in ways that would have been difficult to imagine even recently.” Rob Verger reports on what the visit means for the struggling country’s future.
