VEEP

Sorry, Sarah Palin: Despite a growing drumbeat from conservatives predicting that Hillary Clinton will replace Biden on the the Dems' presidential ticket this year, it's still a total fantasy. The Daily Beast's Howard Kurtz on why the right is pushing the dump-Biden movement--and why the veep's latest gaffe is adding fuel to the fire.

DISCLOSURE

Following furious demands from Democrats to release his tax returns, Mitt Romney offered the fullest explanation yet of his tax status Thursday, saying that he paid a tax rate of at least 13 percent of his income in each of the last 10 years. That’s a long way off from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s claim that an investor at Bain Capital told him that Romney paid nothing in taxes over the last decade. “I’m sure waiting for Harry to put up who it was that told him what he says they told him,” Romney said. “I don’t believe it for a minute, by the way.”

GUN VIOLENCE

A series of allegedly linked shootings early Thursday morning in LaPlace, La., left two law-enforcement officers dead and two others wounded. The first shooting took place in a parking lot at a steel plant, and the second occurred at a nearby trailer park. While at the trailer park investigating the first shooting, officers were ambushed by a man reportedly armed with an assault rifle. Five people were taken into custody, some of whom had been wounded. Investigators say there are no suspects still at large.

HOME SWEET HOME

Ecuador granted asylum to Julian Assange on Thursday, although Britain said it would carry out a binding obligation to extradite the WikiLeaks founder to Sweden, where he has been accused of sexual assault. Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said the asylum decision had come after "extreme and careful" consideration. British officials have said they could revoke Ecuador's diplomatic embassy in London, although Ecuador insisted it will not be treated like a British colony. British Foreign Minister William Hague said Britain will not allow safe passage for Assange out of the country. Assange, at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, called the decision "a significant victory."

Budget Slasher

Sister Simone Campbell, leader of the ‘Nuns on the Bus’ tour, is stepping up her campaign against Mitt Romney’s running mate, saying the Ryan budget would hit the poor hard. Abigail Pesta reports.
