AMNESTY

The Obama administration’s sweeping immigration overhaul, which will allow up to 1.7 million undocumented immigrants to apply to live and work in the U.S. without fear of deportation, went into effect Wednesday. The changes, similar to the Dream Act, affect immigrants between the ages of 15 and 31 who came to the country before they were 16 and have lived here continuously for at least five years. They must be free of serious criminal convictions, be enrolled in or have completed high school, or have served in the U.S. military. Application forms went online Tuesday.

FRONT LINES
The country’s biggest gun lobby has relentlessly promoted the Second Amendment, defending concealed-weapons and Stand Your Ground laws, even in the wake of a series of mass shootings. The Daily Beast’s Caitlin Dickson, Eliza Shapiro, and Kevin Fallon on the most influential people in the NRA.

SYRIA

Explosives hit a hotel used by the ever-shrinking force of United Nations monitors in Damascus on Wednesday. The Free Syrian Army has claimed responsibility, allegedly targeting a meeting of top officials. Syrian state TV said the blast was caused by a bomb planted in a car parked at the hotel and at least three people had been injured, but none of them were U.N. monitors.

VEEP GAFFE

Well, Joe Biden couldn’t let Paul Ryan have the spotlight all week. Republicans hammered the vice president Tuesday after he said Mitt Romney’s and Paul Ryan’s Wall Street policy “will put y’all back in chains.” Biden clarified later that he meant to say “unshackled,” and he suggested the comments referenced House Speaker John Boehner’s use of the same word when describing Paul Ryan’s budget plan. But that didn’t stop the attacks against Biden: former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, for one, said Tuesday night that he wondered if Biden “has the mental capacity to handle” being president.
