However, the article we're featuring today is not just a must read from an academic perspective, as it should be a must read for all public sector leaders AND for all - for as taxpayers, we should back all efforts to spend tax dollars wisely.
Since my friend John Young formerly served as U.S. Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics, he certainly brings all the "street cred" one could ever want to the table on the subject of procurement in the federal sector and the Department of Defense. Thus, I was thrilled to read his op-ed that just hit the Web in Defense News. With the direct title of "Hey DoD, Try Reverse Auctions," John makes a complete, compelling case for the DoD to shift much of its procurement of commodity goods and services to a reverse auction process not only to meet Defense Secretary Robert Gates' acquisition savings targets, but to instill greater transparency, efficiency, and integrity in the many billions of dollars of procurement spending in the military. He concluded with the following call to action:
There is constant debate about acquisition practices, with simple and obvious steps frequently overlooked. Reverse auctioning can save money, increase competition, cut contract officer workload, reduce procurement complexity, provide transparency, and help prevent fraud and graft. Reverse auction tools should be added to the DoD and defense industry acquisition tool kit and used whenever possible to get maximum value for each taxpayer dollar.

My best marketing analysis is this - as T.O. (Terrell Owens) would say, “Get Your Popcorn Ready!” – these movies will make a ton of money and extract an even bigger toll on your parental wallet with all the toys, the lunchboxes, the video games, etc. Bank on it – 2011 will be the year of the fighting machines for the movie industry worldwide!
