After two missionaries were given an experimental treatment for Ebola, questions have swirled about why the hundreds of Africans infected aren't getting it. For good reasons, it turns out, says Michael Daly.
TARGETS ACQUIRED

The Defense Department announced Friday morning that the U.S. bombed ISIS in Iraq. "US military aircraft conduct strike on ISIL artillery," Rear Adm. John Kirby tweeted. "Artillery was used against Kurdish forces defending Erbil, near US personnel." U.S. Navy FA-18's dropped two 500-pound bombs on them. President Obama announced Thursday night from the White House that he authorized airstrikes on ISIS forces who are threatening to massacre thousands of people trapped in mountains in northern Iraq. "When many thousands of innocent civilians are faced with the prosect of being wiped out, we will take action," he said, earlier saying ISIS's plan for the 40,000 Yazidis constitues an act of genocide.

IT'S ALIVE

A new computer chip from IBM that mimics brain architecture uses no more energy than a hearing aid and could represent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence that have long stumped scientists. The chip tries to learn the way the brain does by recognizing patterns, like types of light for instance, to pick out things computers haven't been able to do. For instance, the processor might be able to determine what a person is doing in a video, as computers currently have issues interpreting images. For comparison, the Intel processors found in computers today have 1.4 billion transistors and can use up to 140 watts of power. The new IBM chip has 5.4 billion transistors, and only draws up to 70 milliwatts.
