Cheat Sheet - Obama Orders Up a Syria War Plan, ASAP

Tick, Tock

President Obama wants to make a decision by the end of this week whether or not to expand his war against ISIS into Syria, report Josh Rogin and Eli Lake. However, nobody knows yet how we can do it, or what will happen next.

C'EST LA VIE

Christine Lagarde, the head of the IMF, has been placed under formal investigation by French magistrates for her alleged role in a political fraud case. She had originally been questioned as a witness in the inquiry into Bernard Tapie that has affected several members of former President Nicolas Sarkozy's cabinet. Lagarde reportedly considers their decision to investigate her for "negligence" unfounded and will appeal. The issue involves Tapie receiving 403 million euros in an arbitration payment during Sarkozy's presidency while Lagarde was finance minister. Tapie was a big Sarkozy supporter.

JUICY

America's most powerful female TV anchors are about to be exposed in a new tell-all book, Lloyd Grove reports. Katie Couric comes across as brash, striving, and self-absorbed, Diane Sawyer is a Machiavellian, often-inscrutable workaholic, and Christiane Amanpour has an off-putting moral superiority.

'ISLAM OVER EVERYTHING'

A San Diego native fighting for ISIS in Syria was killed over the weekend, according to the Free Syrian Army. NBC News reported Tuesday that a passport and tattoo positively identified the body as that of Douglas McAuthur McCain, 33. Calling himself "Duale ThaslaveofAllah" on Facebook and Twitter, he declared "It's Islam over everything." In 2004, McCain "reverted" to Islam, according to his Twitter. "I'm with the brothers now," he tweeted on June 9.

Make It Right

General Motors has already received 107 death claims through its program to compensate victims of its faulty ignition switches—and it has only been accepting them since Aug. 1. This number far exceeds the 13 deaths that GM officially attributed to its faulty parts. However, just because these claims have been filed, it doesn't mean they are eligible for compensation. That will have to be determined by Kenneth Feinberg, who has overseen other high-profile compensation cases, such as the BP oil spill in 2010 and the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Because the program will accept claims through Dec. 31, the number of claims will likely grow further. GM has allocated $400 million for compensation, but has not placed any caps on the final amount.
