Pot Doc Fired for Helping Vets Convinced by veterans with PTSD self-medicating with weed, Dr. Sue Sisley pushed for years to let her study marijuana treatment. After finally getting approval in April, Sisley was fired last week from the University of Arizona. Abby Haglage reports what happened to America's only pot researcher. Texas Family Murdered, Including 4 Kids During what appears to be a domestic dispute, six members of the Spring family in Houston were shot to death on Wednesday night. Four of the victims were children. The suspect, Ron Lee Haskell, 34, who was estranged from the family, was arrested after a four-hour standoff with police. Victims were two boys, ages 4 and 14; two girls, ages 7 and 9; a 39-year-old man; and a 33-year-old woman. A 15-year-old girl was wounded in the shooting and was airlifted to a hospital. Police had responded to reports of a shooting, and when they arrived they found five dead and two with gunshot wounds to the head. One of those who was wounded told police it was a domestic dispute from "someone who had left the family." Police went to the relative's home, which led to a standoff that required SWAT teams and armored vehicles. Read it at Houston Chronicle LAME DUCKS 3. Reality Check: Congress Can Do Good on Immigration On Wednesday, President Obama asked Rick Perry to push Republicans to approve money for the border crisis. The request is being met with the same cynical reaction: Immigration action is impossible. John Avlon writes this is a myth kept alive by fear. Five Children Killed in Israeli Raid According to Palestinian officials, an Israeli airstrike on Gaza early Thursday morning killed eight members of a family, including five children, which brings the civilian death toll for Palestinians to 50, while at least 66 Palestinians have been killed overall. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the rocket attacks and asked Israel for restraint, saying, "Gaza is on a knife edge." Israel says the attacks are defensive, as more than 320 rockets have been fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel. Thousands have been sent shelters, but those rockets have caused no serious casualties. Read it at Reuters NOSY 5. Chinese Hackers Go After U.S. Officials According to U.S. government officials, Chinese hackers broke into the computer networks of the Office of Personnel Management, which houses the personal information of all federal employees. The hackers were targeting information on the thousands of employees who have gone for top-secret security clearances, and had gained access to some of the databases before authorities found the breach and blocked them. It is not yet known how they hacked the network. According to the Department of Homeland Security, they have not "identified any loss of personally identifiable information." It is also not clear if the hackers were part of the Chinese government. The last known successful hacking of the U.S. government took place last year, when hackers made off with data from the Department of Energy.
