DEAL MAKER
An email obtained by Lloyd Grove reveals The New York Times CEO Mark Thompson wooed top Guardian editor Janine Gibson with the possibility of editing the Times. Thompson even told Jill Abramson that Gibson would need convincing that Abramson would "sign up for some more years as editor." Grove also reveals that on the same day Thompson emailed Abramson—two weeks before Abramson was dramatically fired—Times Publisher Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr. learned she had hired an attorney to investigate what she believed was an unfair disparity between her compensation and that of her male peers.
STARS AND TEARS
How do you say goodbye to her, after five decades of trailblazing journalism? You call Oprah. And Hillary Clinton. And, of course, you cry. Kevin Fallon writes about the epic View finale, one of the most impressively stacked hours of daytime TV ever.

WRIST SLAP

General Motors agreed Friday to pay the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration a record fine of $35 million for delaying the recall of millions of cars that had ignition defects. Those ignition defects have since been linked to 13 deaths and 32 crashes. In addition, the agency "ordered GM to make significant and wide-ranging internal changes to its review of safety-related issues in the United States." In addition, Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said the administration would like to bring maximum penalties up to $300 million. In a statement released on Friday, GM CEO Mary Barra declared, "We will now focus on the goal of becoming an industry leader in safety."

LURE OF PARIS

Due to safety concerns, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan canceled a visit to the town of Chibok where over 200 schoolgirls were abducted. The president had planned to stop in the town en route to a conference in France, but he will now just head to Paris. Jonathan, who has ruled out negotiations for a prisoner release, is facing growing dissatisfaction with how his government has failed to save the girls.
