CIA Director John Brennan's visit to Kiev over the weekend left many wondering if there was more to the visit than a generic show of support. Eli Lake and Josh Rogin report that Brennan's real motive for traveling to Ukraine was to discuss a potential new policy for sharing real-time intelligence. After years under Russia's aegis, Ukraine's encrypted communications are believed to be easily penetrated by Moscow. The CIA's help may give Ukraine an upper hand in the intelligence battle.
HORRIFIC

A ferry carrying 459 people, many of them students, capsized and sank off the coast of South Korea on Wednesday morning. Officials said 293 are still missing. Two people have already been confirmed dead and 13 injured. The ship was traveling from the port of Incheon, in the northwest, to the southern resort island of Jeju, where many of the students were going with their teachers on a school field trip. It is unclear what caused the accident, though witnesses have reported the sound of the ship making impact with something before it began to capsize. "There was a big noise, then the ship started going down," one student told South Korea's YTV network. Murky waters and poor visibility are hindering rescue workers' efforts to find survivors.

On Tuesday, the NYPD said it was disbanding its controversial unit tasked with spying on Muslim communities. Just a few days earlier, the Justice Department said the spying was legal and even Mayor Bill de Blasio once supported it. Azi Paybarah writes the NYPD decision was about politics, not justice.

As the city marked one year since the deadly marathon bombing on Tuesday evening, the Boston Police Department did a controlled detonation of two unattended backpacks at the marathon's finish line. A barefoot man in a black veil yelling "Boston strong," who appeared to have left one of the bags, was taken into custody by police. The area was put on lockdown, before bomb squad technicians on the scene later issued an all-clear.

It's all fun and games until your brain changes. Using marijuana just a few times per week can physically alter the structure of your brain, a study in The Journal of Neuroscience reported on Tuesday. Scientists examined the difference in brain features between light smokers and non-smokers, and found volume, shape, and density differences in two areas. "This is a part of the brain you do not want to mess around with," study leader Hans Breiter said.
