Cheat Sheet - Saudi Arabia's Comic Book Fatwa

March 28, 2014
NO JOKE

Comic books called "The 99" (for the 99 names of Allah) once touted by President Obama for their message of tolerance, are now the subject of a fatwa in Saudi Arabia, and deemed "evil work that needs to be shunned." As the president visits the often-difficult ally on Friday, he may want to bring up the comic books, says Christopher Dickey, as they represent signs that efforts to build a strong and healthy alliance are likely to go nowhere.

DANGER ZONE

An Obama administration official tells Josh Rogin that the Russian army is fully prepared to invade eastern Ukraine if Putin decides to take military action. What can the West do?

SAVIOR?

The man who ran the insurgent campaigns of Ron and Rand Paul is now working for the Republican Establishment. Jesse Benton, 36, is Mitch McConnell's campaign manager and is one of the few people to have lived on both sides of the GOP. For this very reason, writes Sam Youngman, he might just be the man who can bring the party back together.

OOPS

Talk about a margin of error! The search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 is being moved 685 miles north of where investigators have been searching for more than a week. Malaysia's acting transportation minister announced that new data analysis from the plane's flight path has it traveling at greater speeds than previously thought, which means it used up more fuel. At a news conference, the minister said: "Because of ocean drift, this new search area could still be consistent with the potential objects identified by various satellite images over the past week. This work is on-going, and we can expect further refinements."

FAREWELL

Republican Congressman Mike Rogers, who serves as Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, announced Friday he will not seek reelection in November. Rogers has recently become a well-known face for his repeated criticisms of Edward Snowden, as well as his strident broadsides against President Obama's foreign policy on TV shows. Rogers, who has served since 2001, will be launching a national radio show with Cumulus.
