Obama: Crimea Vote Illegal On Thursday afternoon, President Obama called a vote in the Crimean parliament to join Russia and put the issue to voters a violation of Ukraine's constitution and international law. Obama said the international community is unified in its opposition to actions by Russia in Crimea, pointing to sanctions announced Thursday morning by the State Department, as well as actions by the European Union. The president also said international monitors should be let into all of Ukraine, including Crimea.
