On Thursday afternoon, President Obama called a vote in the Crimean parliament to join Russia and put the issue to voters a violation of Ukraine's constitution and international law. Obama said the international community is unified in its opposition to actions by Russia in Crimea, pointing to sanctions announced Thursday morning by the State Department, as well as actions by the European Union. The president also said international monitors should be let into all of Ukraine, including Crimea. So long as Russia honors agreements and international law, it should be able to keep its basing rights, Obama said.

When the latest Russian aggression ends, Ukraine will still be a borderland caught between East and West. Ukraine can't rely on the West for its independence, Roman Skaskiw writes. In order to find peace and prosperity, Ukraine must reconcile itself to its historic in-between role.
