THE DISCIPLE
In 2001, Steve Drain set out to expose the hateful ways of Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church; today, he is poised to be its new leader, vowing not to be a "stronghold for fags and the majesty the devil himself," reports Caitlin Dickson. A man with a history of belligerence and drug abuse, Drain was ultimately won over by the church and Phelps. Ironically, he is believed by many close to Westboro to be the man responsible for excommunicating Phelps and is now ready to lead the church with the same intensity, anger, and extreme need for dominance as his predecessor.
LOST SIGNAL
Before any physical trace of Flight MH370 is found, there is already a salutary lesson to be learned, writes Clive Irving. This airplane did not vanish, but rather, our ability to accurately track it did. In light of 2009's Air France Flight 447 disappearance, aviation experts realized that we should start streaming data from airplanes to satellites, instead of relying on black boxes that sink to the bottom of the ocean.
COOL IT
Many millennial hipsters may share Rand Paul's anti-surveillance-state beliefs, but that doesn't mean they'll vote for him, writes Michael Tomasky. He'll certainly make some inroads among America's Williamsburgers (Brooklyn, not Virginia). But let's put the brakes on this idea that Paul has some kind of natural and broad-based kinship with the millennial generation.
DISTRACTIONS
Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's motives for shooting down a Syrian fighter plane are fuzzy, reports Thomas Seibert. While Erdogan claims the Syrian MIG-23 violated Turkey's air space and received several warnings, his political opposition views the maneuver as a tactic to distract voters from the prime minister's recent Twitter ban and corruption claims. It was the first time Turkey has shot down a Syrian fighter jet, but with the majority of Turks opposed to military intervention in Syria, it's unclear why exactly Erdogan chose to hit back now.
STYMIED

Since Vladimir Putin destroyed the post-Cold War assumption that European borders would forever more be unalterable by force, the mood in Brussels has darkened, writes James Kirchick. The response so far? Limited sanctions targeting leading figures from Putin's inner circle as well as some pro-Russian Ukrainians. But given the enormity of Putin's actions thus far, some worry that neither of these moves will be enough to deter further Russian aggression, never mind persuade Moscow to reverse course.
