Cheat Sheet - I Was Kidnapped in Crimea

March 24, 2014
NEW STATUS QUO

Over the past few weeks, armed men in Crimea have begun to engage in the abduction and disappearing of activists. In an exclusive interview with Anna Nemtsova, two young women talk about abuse at the hands of Russia's thugs in what used to be Ukraine. "In my mind I was saying goodbye to everybody I loved," says one of the young women.

FOMO

The G7, formerly known as the G8, is meeting in the Netherlands on Monday to work out how to punish Russia for the annexation of Ukraine's Crimea. The emergency summit was called by President Obama in the hopes of continuing steps against the Putin regime, including a potential permanent expulsion of Russia from the G8. The country was admitted in 1998, joining Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Britain, and the U.S. Obama also addressed the U.S. commitment to NATO, telling a Dutch newspaper, "No one should ever question the commitment of the United States to the security of Europe."

PEACE BE WITH YOU?

The news of Westboro Baptist Church's leader Fred Phelps's passing also came with a surprise—that he was reportedly ousted as its leader nearly a year before. Caitlin Dickson reports that Phelps may have been pushed out by his former disciple, the rabidly anti-gay Steve Drain. The reason? Phelps pushed for more humane treatment among fellow congregants.

DÉJÀ VU

While searching for missing Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 in the southern Indian Ocean, an Australian airplane crew says they have spotted two objects. The aviators reportedly saw an "orange rectangular object" and a "gray or green circular object." Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott also told the Malaysian government that a ship, the HMAS Success, is nearby and will be attempting to retrieve the objects either tonight or tomorrow morning. The objects are around 1,550 miles southwest of Perth, Australia.

NEW RULES

More than 500 members of the now-illegal Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt have been sentenced to death by an Egyptian court. Among those sentenced are a handful of leaders of the group behind deposed President Mohamed Morsi. They were sentenced Monday on charges ranging from murder of a police officer to attacking police. Since July of 2013 when the army overthrew Morsi and outlawed the Brotherhood, hundreds of its members have died, and thousands have been arrested. The sentence, which came on the second day of the trial, is likely to escalate already tense Islamic-secular tensions.
