Cheat Sheet - How Fracking’s Kings Double-Crossed Their Way to Riches

March 13, 2014
DESPICABLE

Chesapeake Energy, one of the nation's biggest energy companies, was teetering on the brink of failure in 2011. Then it started gouging rural farmers out of royalties to finance a turnaround. Abrahm Lustgarten and ProPublica expose one of the more cynical plots in recent corporate history.

MYSTERY

On Thursday, the Malaysian government rejected a report in The Wall Street Journal that U.S. investigators believe Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was in the air for four hours after its last confirmed location. The report had cited flight data from the plane's engines that are automatically transmitted. "These reports are inaccurate. The last transmission was at 01:07, which indicated that everything was normal," Malaysia's acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein told a news conference. The CEO of Malaysia Airlines also said that Rolls-Royce and Boeing "did not receive any further transmissions after the last transmission at 01:07." In addition, while reports had surfaced of satellite images showing three large objects in the waters south of Vietnam, Malaysia's civil aviation chief told the press, "There is nothing. We went there, there is nothing."

CRAZY BUT TRUE

An explosion in East Harlem early Wednesday morning leveled two buildings and killed at least seven people. Michael Daly reports on the story of piano-store owner Colin Patterson, who miraculously escaped from his home unscathed after it blew up around him. "I'm a miracle!" he proclaimed.

LUNACY

A car that allegedly broke away from a drunk-driving police stop killed two people and injured 23 when the driver rammed into a crowd of music fans outside a South by Southwest event in Austin Thursday morning. The driver reportedly crashed through barricades outside the Mohawk nightclub shortly after midnight. The suspect was taken into custody at the scene after police hit the person with an electric stun gun. "I saw bodies fly into the air, and there was blood and it was unbelievable," said one bystander, Jayda Luna, 21.

LOST IT

Retired Lt. Gen. Jerry Boykin, the executive vice president of the social conservative group Family Research Council, was caught on mic Thursday at the National Security Action Summit saying that "the Jews are the cause of all the problems in the world" in response to an interview request by Israel National News. He also said President Obama was using "subliminal messages" to send signals of support for al Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood. "If you understand anything about Islam, there are subliminal messages," Boykin said. "His message, really, I believe was, 'I understand you, and I support you.'" Therefore, he said, al Qaeda and the Brotherhood know "that they have a president that identifies with them, that has been supportive of them inside the United States, and is unwilling to go against them." The summit is held by Frank Gaffney for speakers who are not allowed to participate in CPAC. Gaffney has accused CPAC's organizers of having ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. The panel featuring Boykin had its video feed shut down, but the audio continued being broadcast, catching Boykin's remarks.
