Cheat Sheet - Neo-Nazis Pour Into Kiev

February 28, 2014
IT GETS WORSE

While armed Russians have reportedly seized government buildings and airports in Crimea, the fight for Ukraine is being joined by another scary group: neo-Nazis. Michael Moynihan reports fascists from Sweden are descending on Ukraine to, in their mind, save the white race.

CLOSE TO HOME

In a personal speech Thursday at the White House, President Obama announced his My Brother's Keeper initiative for young men of color. "I made bad choices, I got high without thinking about the harm it would do, I didn't always take school as seriously as I should have," he said. The initiative, which will partner with local businesses and foundations, has raised pledges of more than $200 million over the next five years. Obama said helping them is "as important as any issue that I work on."

FAKE MONEY

A software bug seems to have doomed one of the world's largest bitcoin exchanges. Tokyo-based Mt. Gox has gone bankrupt and almost $500 million worth of bitcoins have gone missing. Jake Adelstein reports on the incompetent management and faulty accounting that let a virtual fortune slip away.

THESE COLORS RUN

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled Thursday that a Northern California high school's ban on students wearing American flag T-shirts on Cinco de Mayo was permitted, as the school's concern for racial violence took precedence over the students' rights to freedom of expression. The school had ordered the students wearing American flag t-shirts to turn them inside out because the school had a history of difficulties between its white and Latino students on that holiday. The court's decision was unanimous.

INDEFATIGABLE

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Just a day after being dealt a significant blow when Governor Jan Brewer vetoed an anti-gay bill, social conservatives in Arizona have taken up another pet cause: a bill to allow surprise inspections of abortion clinics. The bill is being championed by the Center for Arizona Policy, an evangelical Christian group that was also behind infamous SB 1062. The push comes as Brewer calls on her legislature to address state's budget issues and its troubled child welfare agency.
