Cheat Sheet - Arizona to Remain in the 21st Century

BROWNIE POINTS

In vetoing SB 1062, the measure allowing, businesses to discriminate against gays and lesbians, Republican Gov. Jan Brewer did the right thing, says Michael Tomasky. Increasingly, he writes, the law is coming to understand what more and more Americans do: Gays are people, too.

SPIRALING

Just a day after a standoff between pro-Russian groups and Crimean Tatars supportive of the recent ousting of Ukraine's president, armed men seized parliament and local government offices in Crimea Thursday morning, and raised the Russian flag above the building. The autonomous region was part of Russia until 1954, and now the pro-Russian groups are demanding Crimea secede from Ukraine or become part of Russia again. While Russian officials have denied plans for military intervention in the region, on Wednesday, President Vladimir Putin ordered military preparedness testing for 150,000 Russian soldiers. On Thursday morning, deposed pro-Russian President Yanukovich declared from Russia, "I still consider myself to be the lawful head of the Ukrainian state, chosen freely by the will of the Ukrainian people."

LIMOUSINE LIBERALS

Seth Rogen and Ben Affleck testified in front of Congress on Wednesday, about Alzheimer's disease and mass killings in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, respectively. With so much press attention, both scorn and praise, focused on their testimony, Tim Teeman asks: Is their campaigning actually a failure of our political process?

FRENEMIES

On his upcoming Monday visit to the White House, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu can expect pressure from President Obama to accept the framework drafted by Secretary John Kerry for Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations. Since the 2010 negotiations failed, and the relationship between Obama and Netanyahu soured, the president has largely avoided the peace process during his time in office. While many of the details of the framework have been kept secret, some have been made public, including the creation of a security zone along the Jordan River featuring fences, sensors, and drones to protect Israel. The president is also expected to meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to court him later in March.

HI HO EQUALITY

A federal judge in San Antonio declared Wednesday that Texas's ban on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional because it deprives gays of due process and equal protection under the law. "Without a rational relation to a legitimate governmental purpose, state-imposed inequality can find no refuge in our U.S. Constitution," Judge Orlando Garcia wrote. But the law will remain in place until the state has a chance to appeal. Garcia predicted the case "will make its way to the Supreme Court."
