ABC's beloved sitcom airs its 100th episode tonight, ostensibly proving that viewers will laugh at the mundane lives of gay couples just as hard as it will at straight couples. But five seasons in, The Daily Beast's Kevin Fallon asks, does the show still embody the mission of its title?

NO END IN SIGHT

Back to square one. Great. House Speaker John Boehner rejected President Obama's offer to make a temporary deal to keep the government open and extend the debt ceiling in exchange for long-term talks. "What the president said today was, if there's unconditional surrender by Republicans, he'll sit down and talk to us," Boehner said. Boehner's endgame remains up in the air, although Politico reports that he has gained respect from his own party, who have tried in the past to wrestle him from power. So one point for Boehner, zero points for the American people? Meanwhile, the debt-limit truthers were out in full force on Tuesday, attempting to debunk Obama's claim of "chaos" if the U.S. defaults.

HELP

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced yesterday afternoon that he's going to present a "clean" (meaning no Obamacare measures, no anything else) debt-limit increase, to last through December 2014, to the upper house. The vote, or at least the first vote, will take place Thursday. The Daily Beast's Michael Tomasky on our last, best hope.

UNREST

Mohamed Morsi, the man who was ousted from the Egyptian presidency in July, will go on trial starting on November 4, the state news agency reported Wednesday. Morsi has been charged with committing and inciting violence after his ouster in July, when the military stepped in and took charge—and banned Morsi's party, the Muslim Brotherhood. The U.S. has reportedly also cut aid to Egypt, although a spokesman for the NSA has issued an official denial. Egypt has been in turmoil since Morsi's ouster in July, with hundreds killed in riots in August.

FIGURES OF LIGHT

American cinema will never be the same. Legendary film critic Stanley Kauffmann died Wednesday at the age of 97. The cause was pneumonia. The critic who defined a generation, Kauffmann came to The New Republic in 1958, after brief stints at Time and Newsweek. Kauffmann is considered of one the first real American film critics, and also was known for his belief in cultural renaissance. "He fathered the term 'the film generation' to describe the rising young wave of cinephiles," writes James Wolcott in The New Republic. There will be no funeral, but rather a memorial service at The New Republic.
