Somalia's al Qaeda affiliate says three Americans joined its assault on an upscale shopping mall in Nairobi that left at least 68 dead. Jamie Dettmer reports on whether they could be from the Twin Cities.

ASSAULT

Blasts were heard Monday at the Kenyan shopping mall where al Qaeda–linked terrorists still held a number of hostages—hours after the Kenyan military launched an all-out assault on the remaining gunmen. A Kenyan military spokesman said earlier Monday that the fate of the remaining hostages in a Nairobi mall is still unclear. Officials said "most" hostages had been rescued and the military controlled "most" of the mall. Gunmen from Al-Shabab, Somalia's al Qaeda affiliate, stormed in the Kenyan shopping mall Saturday afternoon, killing at least 68, wounding 175—including children—and taking a number of hostages. At least 1,000 people escaped on Saturday.

CONSOLER-IN-CHIEF

President Obama memorialized the victims of the Washington Navy Yard shooting on Sunday and called for a sweeping overhaul of the nation's gun laws. "Sometimes I fear there is a creeping resignation that these tragedies are just somehow the way it is, that this is somehow the new normal," said Obama. "We cannot accept this." Obama, who was speaking to 4,000 mourners on the parade grounds at the Marine Barracks, also said that the nation needs to do more to address mental health issues. On Saturday night, Obama asked those at a Congressional Black Caucus Foundation dinner "to get back up and go back at it" to get meaningful gun legislation passed.

ALLO

There was good news along with the not-so-good for German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Sunday's election. The good: she won in a landslide. "This is a super result," Merkel told cheering supporters. Now for the not-so-good: her conservative government appeared to have fallen just short of a majority, meaning they will have to form a coalition government with her leftist rivals. In early results, Merkel's conservative bloc had captured 42 percent of the vote, their best results since unification in 1990. But it still fell shy of the majority, meaning she will have to form a "grand coalition"—although the center-left Social Democrats are getting weary after aligning with Merkel in 2005 and 2009, alienating their base.
