Egypt Death Toll Rises to 525 The Muslim Brotherhood called for supporters of deposed Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi to take to the streets Thursday after the military-controlled government's barbaric attack on protesters the day before. Meanwhile, Wednesday's death toll continues to rise: the Egyptian health ministry says 525 people were killed and nearly 4,000 injured. One mosque where Morsi supporters had gathered became the site of more than 200 casualties. Wednesday's crackdown was expected, but its scale and brutality—12 hours of bulldozers, tanks, tear gas and live gunfire—shocked both Morsi supporters and governments around the world. Obama Condemns Killing in Egypt President Obama strongly condemned the recent violence in Egypt against supporters of Mohamed Morsi, but called the situation "complex" in remarks delivered during his vacation in Martha's Vineyard. Announcing a cancellation of scheduled military exercises with the embattled nation, to whom the U.S. provides $1.3 billion in military aid annually, he said, "While we want to sustain our relationship with Egypt, our traditional cooperation cannot continue as usual when civilians are being killed in the streets and rights are being rolled back." Despite his strong criticism of the crackdown on civilians, the president said the United States wasn't taking sides in the fight for power. "America cannot determine the future of Egypt. Gun-Permit Requests Soar in Newtown Police in Netwown, Connecticut, said Thursday that at the current rate, gun-permit requests in 2013 are likely to be double the number from last year, in the wake of the shootings that left 26 people dead in December. There have been 211 permit requests so far this year, already far more than the 171 last year and the 99 in 2011. Some residents said they fear their rights will be taken away because of the shootings, and that urgency pushed them to get permits. Read it at Daily News WORST YET?
